Where to search for army service records?
Army records are considered public. Any army record and can be obtained at The National Military Personnel Center or at The National Archives. Some records can only be obtained by their owner or next of kin; others can be viewed only with the explicit permission of the owner or their ancestors. There are also millions of army service records that can be freely accessed by the general public without any authorization.
If you need to obtain war army records, you need to complete an official request form, date it, sign it and submit it at the National Military Personnel Center or at The National Archives. British army records can be obtained at the Army Museums Ogilby Trust or at the National Archives. The Army Museums Ogilby Trust manages records of officers and other army ranks from 1920s onward. Records of British officers until 1913 are kept at the National Archives.

In order to search army records you will need only the name of the person. Many people use the army records online to gather enough information to submit an official records request.
