What records of marriages are?
Records of marriage exist since 1600’s. A record of marriage shows details about a person's matrimony. In the US records of marriages are considered public information. Access to these public records of marriage is available to everyone and there are two ways to go for it - to go to the local Record of Marriages department or online. Obviously the second option is better as it requires less time and effort. Moreover an online check for record of marriage licenses will provide you with results instantly, while if you chose to go and request this information from the local authority, you will surely need to wait a couple of days until they find the records and make you a copy.
What information is recorded in a public record of marriage? Why would I need records of marriage license?
The typical details filed in a public record of marriage are:
- names of the people who got married
- date and location (county, state where the event took place)
- old records of marriage certificate may indicate the names of the parents of the people who got married.
You may need to get a copy of records of marriage license for many reasons - name change, pension benefits, mortgage, adoption, etc. In some occasions you may need to check someone else's marriage records - for example if you want to have extra information for one of your employees, or even if you want to make sure you are getting married to a person who is not already married.
