John Rosow is best described as a sardonic, gin-soaked Chicago gumshoe whose skills as a private detective often comes with a price. His latest assignment was to track down a middle-aged man on a train from Chicago to Los Angeles. He was able to identify the man, Harold Fullmer, as one of those presumed dead after the 9/11 terrorist attack, referred to as a "missing person". Face with hefty reward of half-a-million dollars offered by an influential lawyer, he is to bring Harold back to his wife in New York, against the man's will.

The success (or failure) of his mission would depend on many factors, including a LAPD officer, a cab driver, meddling FBI agents, and a sensual femme fatale who seems to be in his every move.
