The story centers on U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels (portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio), who seeks out to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a patient from the island hospital for the criminally insane in Massachusetts, also known as Shutter Island. Teddy suspects there is something wrong with the way hospital doctors administer treatments to their patients: radical, illegal and sinister. His case only grew stronger when the hospital refuses him access to their records.

A hurricane hits the island and cuts off communication from the mainland. An internal riot among inmates traps him as well. He must now attempt to solve the case on his own, with no one to trust, even himself...
