The year was 2017, and humans are living peacefully and safely in the comforts of their homes. They interact with fellow humans in the outside world through "surrogates", remotely controlled robotic representations of themselves, only that these mechanical counterparts are sexy, graceful, physically perfect machines. Whatever harm only affects the surrogates and not their human operators. But things become mysterious after the first human dead in years, and FBI Agent Tom Greer is assigned to investigate. The dead of Jarod, a college student son of the man who created the surrogates, is followed by a series of murders when their surrogates are destroyed, something that is not even supposed to happen.

Agent Greer nearly dies after his own surrogate was destroyed, and find himself working with another agent to track down the killer, only this time he must venture outside the safety of his own home and risk his life in order to put an end to a vast conspiracy.
