It's sort of amazing that it's taken so long for a mockumentary about the poker world to hit wide release. And when I saw the cast (Woody Harrelson, Dennis Farina, David Cross, to name a few) for The Grand, and then when I watched the trailer and actually laughed, well, it's feeling a little like the Twilight Zone in here.
Harrelson, Farina, and Cross are joined by Jason Alexander, Cheryl Hines, Werner Herzog, Michael McKean, Mike Epps, and several actual poker pros like Daniel Negreanu, Phil Gordon, and Doyle Brunson--the list of notable names in this film goes on and on. Check out a more complete list here.
Apparently, they actually play a poker tournament in the film, and much of the content is improvised. Sounds like fun to me.
Writer-director Zak Penn is at the helm for what surprisingly looks to be a pretty good movie.
Cinematical reviewed the movie when it debuted last year at Tribeca, and according to them, the trailer doesn't do the movie justice. To that I say, hell yes, because I think the trailer is pretty good.
The Grand hits theaters in March.
