The National Basketball Association's Portland Trail Blazers and Cable & Wireless are set to announce today a five year contract under which the London-based telephone company will provide Portland, Ore.'s basketball team with technical and marketing support to run its own Internet service.?The deal is just the first of 17 contracts that Cable & Wireless has signed for its new virtual internet service provider (ISP) service.?With this new service the telephone company, which operates one of the largest Internet backbones in the world and runs an extensive dial-up infrastructure, hopes to tap into consumer Internet dial-up business as a wholesaler.?Cable & Wireless sold its retail consumer dial-up operation to Prodigy earlier this year.?Company execs think this strategy will be a success because of the emotional attachment that many consumers feel toward entities such as sports teams.?Read More...
