Spencer Tunick photographs naked people.?It's his living and his passion.?It's what he does.?But it's not what you may think.?His shots aren't "erotic" or "sexual", and his subjects are average, everyday people, some "good looking", others not, all volunteers.?They aren't shot in studios, but lying in the street or standing at gasstations or in vast fields.?According to Spencer, his photos are art.?And his art has New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani pissed off to hell.?His work "Naked States" represents a five-month journey across North America in which Spencer photographed nudes in every state.?He traveled through cities and rural locales, searching for individuals who were interested in forming new American landscapes.?The challenge of breaking past limitations imposed by regional mores created a dynamic tension between the bodies and the outside world.?The end result is a combination of the artist's America Zone series of one and two-person nudes and his Reaction Zone series, group nudes of over 100 people framed by vast undefined spaces, combining elements of performance, sculpture and installation.?In 2001, Spencer Tunick will begin Nude Adrift, an around-the-world trip to photograph nudes in foreign countries.?Bringing the term "traveling artist" into the next century, Tunick will explore various people and their cultures, experiencing place and poetry through images of human nakedness.?To see some of his work click here...
