Because this film is somehow supposed to be a sequel to the orignal 2, so how can the ship be different.

It's supposed to be that the first two movies happened but it's not necessarily ment to be a direct sequel, that way they can get away with things like the spaceship being bigger or that all the characters look different.

think he goes back to space and uses a new ship(adult size) before "returning" to earth and saving the day, as it says in his job description. As for the second movie, it's a total mess compared with the original vision, but that's movies. Yes, a touch-up would be a good idea, if tasteful like E.T. was, not outrageous like greedo!!

The whole story of his dad giving back his powers was cut. I think also the way Lois finds out was changed. Basically most of the stuff that would have made the film great.
