It's actually only made $76,480,000, so I'd say that makes it a big turkey and in no way deserving of a sequel. Not to mention it was basically a crappy Matrix ripoff in the first place.

Woh, back it up.....A rip of of, the matrix?
okay, completely different plot, technology, characters and setting. but its a matrix rip off? Hello, this is your mind saying is your brain made of SHIT!?
These actors weren't half as medioker (thats spelled wrong) as the matrix actors, UW had actors who didnt need glasses to hide their blinking when they shot the guns and they were awesome!!!!

Well, we all know that the Wachowski brothers ripped off the matrix anyways, so why does it matter ;P
I liked the matrix, but if you wanna talk about extremely over-hyped movies...matrix and Star Wars are at the top.
Underworld was a good change from the norm of 2003 movies and gave us a long needed sci-fi horror with some updated effects and technology to make it very entertaining.
If you don't like the movie, find something else to do other than flaming this site. You're only making yourself look like a douche.

I almost fell asleep during the first one, and that's never happened to me before. Just from pure boredom.
People may like it, but I fail to see the appeal.
Personally I didn't think it just ripped off The Matrix films, but a whole bunch of other movies.
And when the ?ber-vampire awoke... what was that? Seriously?

Listen you cant even compare underworld to the matrix totally different genres duh!! If you werent too busy talking narotically then maybe you could get along with the crowd in here, hey i loved underworld thought i wouldnt till i watched it but it is a good vamp movie, the effects are good not alot of CGI unlike the matrix's, if you watch the bonus features on the disc. If you like vamp movies you'll love this one

Not if they're just jumping on the bandwagon. After the Matrix came out it seemed like everyone was releasing ripoffs of it like The One, Equlibrium, Drive, Underworld etc... It's like when Galdiator came out and suddenly everyone wanted to jump on the bandwagon and make period epics like King Arthur, Troy and Alexander. I just think it's a bit lazy and people should be trying to be more original.

this movie is original if you noticed. compare the matrix and underworld, the only common difference is the black leather clothes. other than that they have nothing in common, not story, not mis-en-scene, not sound, not music, not actors, not title, not subject matter and underworld is hardly a rip off of it. also, the period thing came about after gladiator. do the math, king arthur, alexander all came out 3 years after gladiator, which blew anyway so it doesn't matter. the epic movies aren't original anyway because they are ripped off stories from history. underworld is a hugely original movie in all aspects and that is hy i like it so much.

The only new idea here is the scenario of a centuries-old war between vampires and werewolves which isn't actually all that original when you think about it. Everything else about Underworld is borrowed. Its depiction of vampires as aristocratic, pretty people is nothing new. Its dark, colorless look has been seen in countless night-based movies. Its style of gunplay and slow-mo attitude, complete with leather, shades, and flowing acrobatics... sound familiar? It's as if the movie plays by a strictly established set of precedents, from the hip gothic look of the vampires to the modern rules for a cooool action flick. What rules it does bend are minor; the werewolves can change at will and no attempt is made to take reflections away from the vampires. Overall the whole thing is just uninspired.

If you're going for realism then what the hell are you watching Underworld, The Matrix or any other sci-fi movie for? Now I didn't really think much of the two Matrix sequels but I think the 1st one was one of the most original and inovative films of the last ten years, and THATS the movie everyone's been copying.

Matrix? Excuse Me! If anyhting is a rip off it is the Matrix. The Style of the Vampires comes from the imagination of many different points of views. The Movie Blade depicts one. Interview with a Vampire and Queen of the damned depicts another. If you ask me, the style of the Matrix is just another ripoff off the Vampric race, the way they dressed, the way they acted and the way they related to one another. I mean Hello, COMPLETLY VAMPRIC, hardly any emotion and always so spaced from anyone else but thoes like them. Underworld is just another story of the Vampires and honestly is a great film, and if you have a problem with that then fine stick to your overrated Matrix films and stop debating over something that you have no clue about anyways.

The thing with The Matrix is that the wachowski brothers gathered strong influences from all around them to put into that film. From Hong Kong movies and Cyberpunk Science Fiction to Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz. In doing this they ended up with a film that was both original and extremely entertaining. The whole process was very similar to George Lucas when he made the original Star Wars. That movie was born out of movie serials from the 40's and 50's, old Westerns and Japanese films and the spaceship dogfighting sequences were all influenced by stock footage from WWII. The difference between these films and a movie like Underworld is that the motivation behind it is to obviously jump on the current trend of action films with ariel acrobatics and slo-mo shootouts. Simply making the lead character a Vampire doesn't change this fact, you can pretty much see that the only reason they're vampires is because the filmmakers needed some excuse as to why they all have these superhuman abilites. Now whenever a new and original film is released and it's very successful there are always going to be people who jump on the bandwagon, there's nothing really wrong with this and if people get a kick out of seeing the same thing time and time agin then fine but don't be fooled into thinking it's anything more than recycled fluff.
