I really hate to bring back that COMPELLING[/sarc] Marilyn Manson discussion from the poster thread, but is it just me or does this trailer look like a blatant mix of visuals from the "Dope Hat", "The Dope Show", "I Don't Like The Drugs", and "Rock Is Dead" videos? Even Depp looks strikingly like Manson's Bowie-ish Omega character with those shades on.

This movie will be a blasphemy to any honor the film industry still posesses. It is set the Antigone of Childrens films, with T. Burton playing the part of Oedipus. How, you may ask, do I already loathe thee? Let me count the ways: 1st, the song alone is reason enough to hate this movie. 2nd,Tim Burton hasn't done anything good in about 9-10 years , and I see no reason why he should (or even could) turn it around now. 3rd, whatever talent Johnny Depp may or may not have, the not so coincidental resemblences to M. Manson and M. Jackson (!)make him the greater fool for not stopping Burton when he had the chance. FYI, kiddies-Don't mess with that chocolate! 4th, Gene Wilder was the only actor of the last 50 years campy yet sardonic enough to make Willy Wonka greater than the some of his literary parts. By orienting the script to err on the side of fidelity to the novel, Burton already undershot the mark before he even burned the first frame. I could go on and on, but the studio will release the film just the same. I only hope that the pirates (not of the carribean) work double time and kill this borish, bestial, bastard of a film as quickly as possible.

I suppose Mr. Depp will act the role as the mysterious Wonka quite well, however, I cannot help but feel that if Mr. Manson, the original choice for Wonka, were to act in this movie. It would be much more appealing and truly make it a remake of a once great movie.

The fact remains that Roald Dahl, possibly the greatest children's writer of all time, detested the original version (not to mention James and the Giant Peach, and the awful ending to The Witches), and said that the only director he'd trust to make a movie of C&tCF was Tim Burton.
As for the gags, the story isn't supposed to be a comedy. It's about poverty and wealth and values. Come on now.

I think that you are all going about this movie the wrong way. It may be that it wasn't made specifically for you. It's also a remake, and burton knows that, and I don't think he wants to make a carbon copy of the 70' version and good for him. The original probably seemed wierd at the time for its audience, and maybe now is time for a new weird yet lovable wonka. as for depp he is amazing and if you bother to read the book or play you'll see wonka is wierd and uncomfortable. I think everyone should just suck it up and go see it.

Alright. I've read all the comments and discussions that were above this comment and now it's my turn.
First off: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a nice movie with Gene Wilder in one of his most famous and popular roles.
Second: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a film (not a re-make) by the Genius behind Nightmare Before Christmas: Tim Burton.
I know that many people are split between the "it will be awesome" and the "it will suck" perspective, and so I will add my thoughts. This movie will be one thing: DIFFERENT.
It's not going to be the same as the first film, and it will be more similar to the book, but the two movies are not the same and should NOT be compared that way.
Ok. I think I'm done. Have I pacified all the arguments regarding this film without A)offending people and B) lapsing into an argument about Johnny Depp? If so then my work is done.
Excellent.

In first grade, I had the pleasure of reading both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator with my teacher Ms. Tiyi (oh How I miss you Tiyi and Dave! If you're reading, HELLO!). She turned me on to Roald Dahl for life.
The excellent thing about this film is that it is not just an American film. It encompasses both English culture and American culture by having actors from both sides of the pond! Roald Dahl was Welsh in case you didn't know.
Also, the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was great because of Gene Wilder's performance, but it was in no way as good as the book was. This is why I shall treasure it for what it is, and treasure this film for what IT is: a great interpretation of a brilliant book which dared me to dream!
I can't wait for the Great Glass Elevator! :)

P.S. Tim Burton = good, Johnny Depp = my perfect Wonka (he looks like the candy bars to me!), and I will be seeing this 50+ times :).

As agreed with one of the above posts.
Tim Burton is famous for his way of tweaking and twisting scripts and stories to suit his purposes and his vision.
Johnny Depp seems to be a good choice for the role and one can but hope he will be able to fill Wilder's shoes (for I still think he did the best Wonka).
I have one question: Is this script still filled with the same jokes and prose quotes as the first? Taking into account that this movie is a seprate one from the 70's original.
Still, see first, critque later.

I, as a child, thought WW&TCF was just a little creepy. That acid-like tunnel and Gene Wilder going off and on on nothing at all.
This is a 'different' level of creepy: Tim Burton. Kids either love it or hate it. However, I am guessing most of the posters are teen+.
On a final note, I must say this film looks very interesting to say the least.

Alright, this film is supposed to be based on the book. Although Gene Wilder was brilliant in the 70's version, Johnny Depp is only only actor right now who can be a little kooky and yet not over the top on the antics. He is a little bit crazy...and that's the basis of the Willy Wonka character, he is a little crazy. Incase those who haven't read the book don't know, there is a Wonka father character. The 70's movie was good, but not very true to the book.

He should have been cast as Willy Wonka, can you image him doing the Tyrannasaurus Rex in the Chocolate Factory!!! And then when the kids die, he screems out "SMOKIN'".
And about what everyone is saying about the book, who would read the book when there's a movie? The original movie is the real deal. They should have made a remake based on the original movie and burned the book. Fuk the book. "TEACHERS LEAVE THEM KIDS ALONE!!!"

um...Dahl never knew Burton's work.
His family agreed to it, but Roald never saw a Burton Flick.
Get your info right.
This looks like a piece of shit. burton is disengenuous when he says he hated the original and then lifts so many elements out of it.
The Wonka of the Book is a goateed spritly little fello with a twinke in his eye, NOT a creepy pedophile with false teeth,
This is an insult to the GREAT original film. Sure Dahl hated it, but he wrote the screenplay, and he Hated everything. Gene Wilder shows just how hard it is to be truly eccentric, not just "playing weird" like the light weight Depp here.
This Trailer Craps ShitDiddlyUmshous Bars.

I will give Burton the benefit of the doubt.
Yes the Trailer is like a Kubric movie played at high speed and set to second rate disney music.
Yes planet of the apes did suck much balls.
However Burton, despite one bad film has a stellar track record, and he made up for that bad film 10 fold with Big Fish.
And Tim burton has assured his audience that this film is not to be a musical like the first was so I don't feel that annoying diddies are going to be a long standing problem in this film.
Lastly...leave Gene Wilder alone. The 70's version was great.
I imagine that if we go into the theater expecting to see an entirely different movie than the first, I feel that we won't be dissappointed. Lets show a little faith...that is if movies like Star Wars Episode one and Alien Vs Predetor hasn't destroyed all hope for us all.

That's the point dude. The whole setting should be really disconcerting, including the overly cheery music, and wonka should be a little uncomfortable and creepy looking. This was the vibe of the book.
you guys remind me of my mom, when she doesn't like the actor who plays the bad guy. "There's something about that actor that I don't like." Of course...He's the bad guy, and he's playing it well.

Ok, I know I'm repeating what others have said, but for you retards out there... THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM THE 70s ONE!!!!!!!!! It's not a remake of the movie, it's a movie based on the book. Also, how can you judge how a movie will be when you have only seen a one minute trailer that jumped all around? To go back to what someone said, amazing movies have had really shitty trailers. For example, the trailer for "The Princess Bride" sucked, but the movie was fabulous. And if this movie is like a Dr. Seuss movie that's because Dr. Seuss is weird just like the book and just like Roald Dahl. Tim Burton is great, as is Johnny Depp so this should be good. Just see the movie before you start to judge.

my personal opinion is that this movie is NOT for young kids. The deep sarcasm in the preview makes me think that this is no little kids movie (and by little I mean 7 - 10) Adults would probably enjoy this movie and it's dark humor that is concealed by an opaque sheet of seemingly 'happy' little cons like the rhyme bout chewing gum. Someone said that this book is a reference to how something becomes so obsessive, it begins to hurt you and the others around you. i don't think at a second that this film will convey to the light hearted and wide eyed. The point is not the actor (cept for the fan girls of depp, my opinion on himm is that of this; hes an actor, he's alright at his job, nuff said.) but the reason behind the movie, the idea that they're trying to tell you. So let's think about that for a moment instead of hurling insults at each other.

I think neither of them did a better job, or will do a better job than the other one, simply due to the fact that they're different actors. Why compare them? They may be playing the same charcter, but that's like comparing all four (Three? Two?) James Bonds. It's useless and a bit pointless.
People will always make movies, and some people will agree with them, and some people won't. Everytime Disney makes another stupid sequel, I get upset, but then I watch it and realize that they're not THAT bad.
Give it a chance. Despite the Dr.Suess looking set, you might find that you'll be able to tolerate it. :-)

I had first heard the news on the radio and later I found it to be true. At first I didn't think Depp was right for the part, but I realised they are trying to stay true to the book. The author Roald Dahl was not fond of the 1971 version, but it has left an impression in our mind. In the book Willy Wonka was not a loving person like in the movie played by Gene Wilder. Wonka is more of a Boogieman character. Anyway I think the movie will be good and will add a different flavor to the story. I love movies of today because we have the technology and know-how to do it like we've always wanted. Getting back on subject, the deal with the song is, in the book Charlie and the other kids are first welcomed into the factory by puppets, but I'm not sure if they sang in the book. I guessed that was the song they sang and they put it into the teaser trailer. I knew it was because they sing "Willy Wonka here he is." Trust me when you have gone everywhere on the internet looking for information on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory you know a thing or two about it. I know more than anyone.

Come on, Wilder acted like an adult, and that's NOT how Wonka's supposed to be, he's a kid at heart, and Depp portrayed that really well. I say that all you people who put down the movie should just shut up, go watch it, and if you still don't like it, keep your opinions to yourself.
