Actor Seann William Scott ("American Pie," "Old School") might be in the running to play Ash in the re-remake of "Evil Dead," according to a not-necessarily-reliable source. ?This rumor comes the day after Variety reported that director Sam Raimi ("Spider-Man") and star Bruce Campbell would be producing a new version of "Evil Dead."
The source is by no means official--as of this posting I cannot even confirm that the source is close to the studio or the producers.
The rumor is intriguing, however, since Bruce Campbell reprising his role as Ash is still questionable and there has been no other mention of casting.
Seann William Scott as Ash? ?A remake of "Evil Dead" without Raimi and Campbell would be a slippery slope to run across. ?If they have to go without Campbell, an unknown might be a better option, although it doesn't seem like a terrible choice to go with Stifler in the "known" actor category. ?It is hard to come up with another known actor who could pull off the simultaneous dumbass/action hero as well as Campbell.
IESB reports that Nicholas Brendon (TV's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") was once suggested to Raimi as an alternative, since he looks a lot like Campbell:

Bruce Campbell ? ?Nicholas Brendon
Personally, I would rather see an actor who can portray Ash than an actor who looks like Bruce Campbell.
Though the Seann William Scott tidbit was not an internet rumor when I got a hold of it, it is officially an internet rumor now, so do what you want with it, but don't say I didn't warn you.
UPDATE:
A scooper for Dark Horizons has released more casting gossip. ?According to the article, Bruce Campbell will definitely not be playing Ash in the upcoming sequel.
The scooper also said that Justin Theroux ("Charlies Angels: Full Throttle," "Mulholland Drive") was one of the possible contenders to play Ash.

Justin Theroux

Seriously, if Campbell doesn't want to come back then leacve the 3ED film's alone & don't try & get someone to fill his part!! I'm suprised Raimi would do another ED film if Campbell wasn't going to reprise his role...

While Bruce is a fantastic figure who can be masterfully crafted by Sam into some great roles, I don't think his brilliance as Ash precludes anyone else from filling his shoes and chainsaw.
I'm excited about the ED remake and would love to see what they can do after so many years from the original.

I know loads of fanboys are going to say if Campbell's not Ash then they shouldn't make the movie but I think if it's going to have Rami and Campbell's backing then it deserves a chance.

i do agree bruce campbell would be my first choice to play ash, and if anyone else were making this movie, i'd reject the idea of bruce not starring. but i trust both sam and bruce, and i respect any decision they make.

I think Nicholas Brendon would be perfect for a young Ash, not only does he look like him but the way he acts and makes one liners like in Buffy would be perect. Just as long as he doesn't act like a pussy like he does in Buffy.

I would love to see a remake with all this new tech. I and others would be able to enjoy the classic as well as an updated version. The only thing I wonder about is will it be a serious horror flick like the first or silly like the others? I sure hope it's like the first nice and true classic horror!!!!!!!!

remakes suck! evil dead was an awesome movie, in fact probably the best horror movie of its time. Campbell will always be ash, end of story. I dont see scott or the guy from buffy doing presenting ash in a positive light. the only thing i am hoping for is maybe this movie will gross enough many and true evil dead fans will get another evil dead 4..starin BRUCE CAMPBELL!!! i'll get off my soapbox now...

I have to trust Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi to make the right decision but i most definetly do not want to see Justin Theroux or Nickolas Brendon as Ash simply because they are both female genitalias and could not handle the pressure of taking on the deadites.

Who are we to disagree? We're the ones who'll be watching the film, we are the fans, we are the ultimate and final critics.
I know that sounds all high and mighty, but I think too many producers and directors forget that. While, I trust Raimi and Cambell to make good decesions, shouldn't we, the fans, be the ruler to which those decisions are put? (especially for a cult classic like the Evil Dead)

it could be hit or miss based on fan suggestions. matt dillon, sucky suggestion, but others aren't. it's important to remember they call the shots, all we can do is post random likes and dislikes and suggestions, whether or not they take us seriously is up to them. i just want to see some guy kick major deadite ass with witty one-liners and creatures to seem more real and not as much CG'd

Only Bruce can play Ash.No one else has his following from any kind of movie as he does.Hell even in the shitty remakes coming out the original stars at least make an appearance..... why not just reprize the role.

Here's the thing. Evil Dead was a movie when it came out and now it has become a legend. That's the problem with remakes, people have too high expectations. Evil Dead is Sam's creation and he can do whatever he wants with it, but remember Sam Raimi is not stupid and he didn't even sell out when he made Spider-Man: he always puts the material first. What more could we ask for? And as for Bruce, well the movie launched his career, why not do the same for some other talented but still starving actor. As long as it has a good script and stays true to the story, I say why not? A new generation of movie goers in the near future might make it a cult classic...who knows!

whose ever idea it was to make a remake of this movie but not have bruce as ash should be shot. look sequals always go to sh** when the actors aren't the same. my opinion is (but probably nobody cares) you'll never find an actor like bruce who can say those famous lines.
