here's the thing, comic books are NOT cool. they never were, they never will be.
you?re never going to get the girl by telling her you have a first print full run of emerald dawn.
i'm not saying comics aren?t interesting, artistic, or worth reading. the reality of this is that if this movie gets made, more people will read green lantern, and it's up to DC to decide what they are going to do with those new readers. hate WB all you want, but the reason most of you are mad is that you know DC is going to end up turning out the lowest quality trash as possible and sell it to kids for as much as possible sticking the green lantern name on it.
it's not jack black or WB that are the problem here.

Wow.. Seems like somebody spent to much time reading comics as a kid and blames his lack of looks and a girlfriend/wife on them. I'm sorry.
I find my girlfriend quite attractive, and being with her for 5 years must mean something.. Now lets see that's several hundred comic books I own, and not to mention the heroclix (you know little plastic comic book characters for a game). Yup I'm a nerd through and through, but believe it or not I don't Whoa my girlfriend with my comic collection. so.. Perhaps you should keep your hole shut and let people enjoy comics, because for most people (Save for you perhaps) they aren't ruining their lives. A$$HOLE!

I don't buy into the whole 'tarnishing the franchise' thing, since, if I were to start holding things sacred, I wouldn't start with comics. That said, Green Lantern fans, you have my sympathies. After all, if this movie is unsuccessful, it'll be highly doubtful that studios will touch GL again. If it's highly successful, they won't want to do another unless it's a comedy. Taking a comic so seriously you'd call a comedy a sacrilege is one thing, but being disappointed that perhaps the one shot at making a movie you've been dreaming about squandered? Well, that I can understand.

The idea is ridiculous. I like Jack Black and I like Green Lantern...they dont work together. If you want a funny movie CREATE a new idea. Dont ruin an existing one that some people care about. If treating comics seriously can be successful for Spiderman, X-men, and Batman then it can be for Green Lantern. Green Lantern has a great story to be told.

You would think with the new hype of the Justice League and the switch to an Africian American character in the comics and TV they would take the opportunity to create a serious comic book movie, like Spiderman, that would appeal to a larger audience. Green Lantern has a unique story, which most of us early thirtysomethings grew up with, that seems to annoy me to be switched to a comedy routine. This attempt at unorginality will definitely bomb with today's teens who probably never even heard of the Green Lantern unless they purchased the older Super Friends on DVD. Not likely! This is insulting... is the movie industry that desperate that they can't come up with anything unique? I guess a quick buck from the cattle/audience wins over originality.
they should give it a shot

unless you want to count jay and silent bob's bluntman and chronic, there are NOT many comedy movies based on a super hero, especially not a super hero of such prestige. I say give it a shot, unless you have endless pride in your history of comic books or strongly dissagree with people changing thier opinion of a favorite super hero, the idea should, in no way, be "pissing people off"
and by the way, hero clix isn't nearly as good as its predecessor, MAGEKNIGHT

hey i may have never wowed a girl with the fact that i had some special comic... but i have gotten a few numbers from the fact that i once got $2,500 for a green lantern number 2 (that i only spent $45 on) several years back (yes this is true). since this was the most i have ever gotten for a comic i beleve that green lantern deserves a little more respect than a comedic version portraid by jack black (though black is a great comedic actor, and singer)that's what i beleve, hey we all got our opinions...

That was The Green HORNET you lum lum. This idea absolutley sucks... I mean SERIOUSLY SUCKS... hoover style $3.00 hooker sucks! Are they crazy, The Green Lantern could have been one helluv a good movie but now the WB has to go and fuck it up for anychance at their ever being a good movie of TGL for at least another 20 years. Look at the crap Batman was put through, even the 70's BAM POW BIF comedy version blew major chunks (although it was kinda funny with the "Batoosie" and all) but to take a character with a cool ass origion like TGL and the movie potential to actually be good and create some backwards comedic crap like whats about to happen is unacceptable. Jack Black is an awsome comedian but putting him or any other comedian in a TGL movie thats freakin a comedy to begin with is just awful. I can't blame Jack, I mean after-all he's an actor and more than likely will be getting paid nicely but obviously he's not really into TGL at all because there is no way he would have anything to do with this film if he was. I don't even want to HEAR from any dumb ass kids that don't know anything about TGL or who he is and watching The Justice League cartoon doesn't give ya any credit either kiddies, you should only comment in this thread if your in your mid 20's and upward. Ohh and Kevlar, your comment and opinion was the most retarded hing I have heard in a long time and I have heard some dumb ass remarks from quite a few people but what you said... THAT SHIT WAS A RETARDED MASTERPIECE. What the hell are you taling about and why are you here anyway? Have you NEVER heard of comic book conventions or the like? I ask that because at these events you will find that there are PLENTY of women that are very much into comics (sometimes even more than some guys) and guess what... some of these women are actually hot, you dumb ass homo. Then again your more than likely american so you probably can't help yourself too much... poor you, pathetic looser, now go out and pay for your next lay.

Funnything that no real GL fans have responded so far. Nobody has mentioned how GL has a long history of being a platform for social commentary. Going back to the 70's when it addressed racial injustice right up to today when it is tackling issues other comics are afraid to touch.
I'll admit there are a great many retarded people in the world who, having an adolescent sense of humor, seem to like Jack Black. That's their right; but this is a terrible idea.

Okay first off I would like to address the guy who thinks comics are geeky and these people can't get women. The fact is EVERYONE has some sort of hobby that someone else thinks is stupid. But when someone like Warner Brothers comes along and spits on your hobby or the things you like, then you'd get PISSED. Its like making a movie about Michael Jordan and it staring a white guy. WHAT THE HELL are they thinking. If they do the same shit to GL as they did to Catwomen, I will NEVER fucking watch another WARNER BROTHERS film. and if Jack Black goes through with it, I will never watch another Jack Black film either. It is the dumbest shit to make a few bucks that I have ever heard. And hell none of the Lantern's were comedic until Kyle Rayner, so why do something this dumb? Screw Warner Brother, and I not the only one who will never watch another WB film. Ya'll should the petition over 2000 names. So eat shit you fucking comic book haters.

well now that i have read most of the crap posts i can say that you all have missed the point of this
this is a green lantern movie
not a hal jordan movie
(he was the one that you are thinking of)
there are 3000 green lanterns in the books that can be made in to a movie
It is a frist step in getting a hal jordan movie
with the fx in todays movies we will see some great power ring use
and life for the green lanterns will come to the place we want.
most of you that have posted crap here do not know what you are talking about
this is not a comic issue
we all have had one before
so sum up and enjoy the ride

I don't get why some people take it all so personally. Like there's a comic book that they've loved their whole life so when a studio wants to make a movie they suddenly get real defensive as though how dare they touch my beloved comic. If the movie turns ou to be crap then they can still enjoy the comic, nothing will have changed and if they're so worried that watching a shit movie of their favorite comic will put them off it forever then they should simply not go. It's simple.

While I am an advocate for new ideas and such, I do believe they might have made a mistake on this one. If you wana make fun of something, make a parody, don't call it the same thing and fool people into believeing that its going to be decent material. I haven't seen too many of Jack Black's movies, but when I read that it's going to be comparable to The Mask? They aren't doin GL justice anymore. But who knows, the movie has yet to be finished, and viewed. So maybe, by some miracle, they will come out strong in the end.

I'm with you on this one, and I am a teenager. I am seventeen years old, and have been reading this book for years. It is insulting to think that anyone would even suggest turning one of the most powerful superheros into a goof ball. As most of you have stated... I too love Jack Black, he is hilarious, but his role( if he lost some weight) would be Plastic Man. For Plastic Man is a very amusing character that someone like Black could portray well.
But, back to the point, The only decision that the producers need to make is which Green Lantern story to start with... Alan, Hal, or Kyle.

Wow, so, just because noone has addressed the fact that Jon Stewart was one of the first black superheros (that didn't suck), or the fact the Green Lantern was the first comic to tackle something as controversial as a vicious gay bashing, that's supposed to mean that we're not true fans. That's offensive.
And while I'm at it, I'll tell all of you who think that you should make fun of comic book nerds, that I am one... amongst other things. I've also done modeling, I am a male cheerleader, and my girlfriend is a beautiful cheerleader as well, so you all can take those bullsh*t stereotypes of yours and shove them up your ignorent fat a**es!

Uhh, ok, well first things first. Yeah, I am kind of a geek, but by no means would I call my self a comic book nerd, I don't own, nor have I read enough of them. If I were to call myself one, I would be doing the actual comic book geeks an injustice by calling myself that. Second, whoever said that not many people have heard of the Green Lantern, no offense and all, but you are dead wrong. There are a crapload of people who have heard of the Green Lantern. Even if you don't go by all the fans, a great many people, kids and adults alike, like watching superhero cartoons. One of the more popular superhero cartoons at the moment is Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited (which just started). In these cartoons one of the main super heroes is the Green Lantern, who I might add is badass. Now since I'm not a huge comic book fan, the only thing I know is that this guy is black, completely lost on his name. I'm sure others will be able to say who, after reading a lot of this forum, I'm assuming his name is Hal. Anyway, my final point, I agree w/ most of you in saying that I think Jack Black is an excellent comedic actor, but him and Green Lantern don't really go together. But who knows, maybe they could turn something good out if this, I just wouldn't hold my breath on that.

I'm a huge GL fan. HUGE! I may not be happy about the "comedy" movie idea; but it wont ruin GL for me. Jack Black may be a nice guy, may be a tool, I don't know. But I wont blame him for "ruining" my idea of what Green Lantern is to me. I'm not a fan of Black's. Don't like his films, or his "music." If his film gets more readers interested in Green Lantern, GREAT. More power to him. I'll see it. Might even like it.(doubt it, though)

Im a random shmoe but I love the old episodes of JLA and I draw comic books and I know how much of a pain it is to meet a deadline... Im addressing the fellow, as of now, who belives "colored drawings on a dead tree" are some what "Unnessasery" (heh, I cant spell) then he should start to cope with the fact that people are not alike in every aspect... And about Jack Black, I really like his music and movies. Who knows, was it declared a comedy? Black may have a grip on the story and be quite serious about... hell, he might even could have been a big GL himself, We may never know (at least until the "behind the scenes" comes out). Anyway, that my little tid-bit... So later.
