Troy totally overdoes it, changes historical aspects and is kitschy until the last dialogue. Nevertheless: the movie works. Sure, it is impudent from director Petersen to change the history to get a movie working on the screen, but it worked with LORD OF THE RINGS as well, and story is story, history is history, book is book and cinema is cinema!

I did not think the film worked, at all! If you took the most cliche and catch phrasey lines from a random assortment of action films you could have made the dialogue for this film! Similarly, it took an amazing story that has been the foundation for a massive portion of Western literature, and condensed it into a ridiculous set of action sequences with characters who were, for the most part, completely unlikeable. The film catered to women looking for eye-candy and men looking for blood. This film was attempting to attain the same immortality that Achilles is apparently searching for, but unlike the real Achilles, this film version is very forgettable.

This movie was always going to be trash with no depth of character. Brad Pitt hamming it up clown shoes. Atrociously bad looking costumes. They look rubber! Idiotic and generic dialogue. Effect shot after effect shot. Unlikeable and seemingly irrelevant characters as the story wears on (even Paris whom was half the reason why the war started). Music that is a pretentious attempt at creating epic scale.
P.S - And I havn't even seen it yet.
Verdict:
Generic Hollywood blockbuster that is a movie of the week at best. A t-shirt!

Only a few of the constumes looked like rubber because its treated leather, thats what was used if you wanted moderate armor with ease of movement. Metallic armor was also used, as in the film. So don't be such a stupid fag.
My review : Excellent action, especially the fight between Hector and Achilles. Let down by wooden acting, and unlikable characters (apart from possibly hector). Bana did a far better job then Pitt in, but getting bored between action is never a good sign. still it's enjoyable. 7/10

Well for one thing, according to the Iliad the siege lasted for ten years, not a few weeks like in the film.
Remember this is myth, not true history.
p.s Yep, that move where he kills that huge guy in the beginning is way cool.
better than I expected

Overall, I was surprised. I'm one of the few people under 100 who have read both the Iliad and the Odessey ( and liked them both). I was worried that these Hollywood types would skimp and not portray Paris as enough of a pansy or Achilles (sorry about my spelling) as an overgrown-semi-imortal-spoiled brat. I went to the movie expecting it to be horrible, but it's like a clasic story, so i felt obligated. It wasn't as bad as I thought, Pitt did a good job acting like an imature little f#@% (or maybe that wasn't acting). Whoever played Paris was ok at being cowardly, but the script relied a little to heavily on the "love" aspect of it. Overall thought: the only charachter I was truely disapointed in was Odesseus. He seemed much cooler in the books. Plus, he wasn't very convincing.
PS: I thought Achilles died before the whole horse incedent. Was that just a rewriting for the movie?

The movie isn't bad. If you have read the Iliad and the Oddyssey then it makes sense - whereas if you haven't even got a basic understanding of those two epics then you may well think that the characters are contrived.
Pitt plays Achilles well - like the above poster said. He isn't the best in the movie (that goes to Eric Bana), but he plays his role surprisingly well. The fight scenes were very well done, and the only battle scene I didn't like was the very first one. I know it's meant to set Achilles up as being unstoppable, but it shouldn't end with just one stab - although it was a pretty cool stab admittedly.
They stuck quite closely to the book - and to another poster - yes Aeneas did get a mention. I thought it was a bit too long though. A very good movie though

I remember reading somewhere that archeologists found the reminants of Troy in Northern Turkey some time ago. As for the film, well overall it was pretty good although that scene where Achilles is teaching his cousin how to fight has to be the gayest, most homo-erotic swordfight ever.
Also, when I saw the film I think there must have been some really dumb people in the audience because in the bit where the Greeks all creep out of the horse one guy shouted out "Oh come on!"
What about the setting and scenery??

Hello all. I'd like to ask, what do you think of the setting, scenario, beaches, cities etc. Most of the movie was filmed in Malta, my home island-country, and it would be nice to have some comments.

are you a little stupid? the story of Troy, as well as the Trojan Horse, is a very well known legend in Greek Mythology. The story of Troy, Helen, Hector, Paris, Achilles, etc. is all in Homer's epic poem Iliad, which i've read many times. Although the movie does leave out some details and could give more backround on the wars of Agamemnon and the birth/aquired immortality of Achilles. All toghter,i think, it was a well directed, briliant, and modern interpertation that goes abaove and beond the Iliad

You will love this movie if all you go for is the fighting. The movie was so historicaly and mythalogicly inacurate it was astonishing. I questioned where screen play writer and director heard of the battle of Troy. Among many problems with the movie my main complaint was how inacuate it was. They put the battles in the wrong order. My second major problem with the movie is that they expanded the conflict. No story is better then the truth (They obiously didn't know that). Troy was attacked by 1000 ships and 50,000 men. Hmmm let me freeze that sceen were the boats are from horizon to horizon, i think thats a bit more then 1000. And in the scenes where the greeks were coming over the beach to attack the Trojan walls, i think that is about 1000000 people at least. Although those are some major problems they hail in comperison to how short they make the war look. Correct me if im wrong but i believe the Trojan war lasted longer then 10 years. The only passage of time that is shown is (6 months later). They have freakin like 4 battles and then "oH! lets make a horse (6 months later)" "Ahh we win." I like alot of movies that are considered subpar to most, but this was a rechid movie. Do not support people who make movies like this, do not see TROY.

The movie would have been so stupid if every 20 minutes a tag came up saying 3 years later or whatever. Remember, the whole story of Troy is based around legend and myth anyway, just because it reads a certain way in The Iliad doesn't mean that that was exactly the way everything happened. When The Iliad was written there was probably alot of embelishing and artistic lisense taken, just like the writers of this film have done.
Achilles was a necrophiliac. Sorta.

Androdaira... She disguised herself during the battle of Troy. Achilles fought and killed her; afterwards, he took off her mask and saw how beautiful she was, and he fell madly in love with her. Then, after a little while, some men made fun of Achilles' "doings" and Achilles punished 'em.
Spoiler...
Overall, it was a really good movie. I liked it. It was EXTREMELY inaccurate, but I did really enjoy it. I took it completely at face value instead of digging in. 'Cause, frankly, when you dig too far into a movie, you are almost never satisfied. "Troy" made me suck in my breath as a hord of Greeks ran at me. It made me twist uncomfortably in my seat when "Achilles" had a knife at his lover's throat. It made me choose sides, and cry out when my favorites were killed. That's why, in my opinion, it's a good movie.
