It wasn't her! It was her younger brother!

They also sued a 71 yr old man. He was just a patsy though. This girl just gave him the line 'I wanted to do my homework at your house'. I bet she was too busy torturing puppies and shoplifting to be neat about her crimes against humanity/RIAA.

You need to update this. The girl's mother settled the case within hours, paying $2,000 and removing KaZaA and the music files off their computer.

And give it a rest. The subpoenas are doing what they're supposed to be doing: Scaring people into understanding that they're not supposed to be copying music files and making them available for widespread copying.

Update: girl's mother backs down to a greedy industry who mangles the concept of theft to squeeze money from their overly grateful consumer base.

According to our constitution; no one under the age of consent can enter into a legal contract OR be held responsible for criminal misconduct...including petty theft of boy band shlock

Those morons...I hate those rich bastards. The RIAA is just squeezing money out of anyone they can. They're rich enough already...but they still persist and sue 12-year-old girls! >:O
Greedy bastards...

There's no real threat of being prosecuted. Those that have settled out of court are spineless. The RIAA has yet to argue the case in court and would probably have their cases dismissed in most courts due to the near-impossibility of proving intent or even participation, for that matter, in any internet-related crime. Hell, even If they DID decide to actually go to court; that just means free air-fare to the city of prosecution for court-side seats to a legal debacle. As soon as they lose millions on these frivilous lawsuits, they'll retreat back to their mansions and plot to make up the losses elsewhere. [i.e. cd & ticket prices]

What a surprise!!!!!!!!   > reply

If you can't do the time...then don't do the crime...

Like it's a surprise. How long has the RIAA been talking about this. Sure there are a lot of rich people involved but there is an underlying industry that is suffering. The store clerks, distributors and so on and so on all have regular people like us that they have had to lay off because of the downturn in the business. How about the independant record stores that are closing because of this.

You think you're hurting millionaires??? All that's happening to them is that they are "suffering" with a bank account worth 90 million instead of 100 million. It's the people earning minimum wage that you're putting out of work. You want to raise money for someone...how about those people!!!

I agree 100% that the record companies operate on an outdated business model and they needed to respond to that long ago, but everyone knows that downloading is illegal and that the RIAA has been talking about busting out the lawyers for a long time. Now we're all fucking surprised that they are suing...maybe we should have a telethon for stupidity.

Musicians are not the only recipiant of these funds.  Why are so many so short-sighted. Piracy is huge, expensive problem affecting more than millionares.  In fact, piracy hardly affects the artists; most of their money comes from tours.
Finally, not being able to afford something doesn't mean you can just take it. Seriously, that is your arguement?

That's nothing compared to all the Nazis that were out of a job when Hitler was defeated.

Workers supporting RIAA are not innocent. They are victims of their situation at best.

you just answered the question....there using the 12yr old as leverage against the parents. If they (the parents) knew better they could have fought and won for the use of strong arm tacktics. BAD CORPARATE INDUSTRY NO MORE ROYALTYS!!!!

remember tape cassettes and VHS tapes...same argument applies. (what constitutes piracy?) unauthorized use or distribution FOR PROFIT!!!!!!

distribution: for profit or not

Ha major companies charge around 15 to 20 dollars for a cd. Now there is no guarentee that these songs are even good. We might see a good video or hear a single. Although that is no guarentee to the quality to the rest of there songs. They can make like 1 or 2 good songs and we buy there album for 20 dollars under the illusion that the rest of them are just as good. I am not saying that downloading mp3's is right but instead of the riaa and music labels lowering there prices for a product that cost .50 cents to produce they sue 12 year old girls. So if you ask me they are just as good a nazis.

RIAA represents the "haves"   > reply

Posted by Knight_Shift (TheWord@411.com) on September 20, 2003 11:56 AM

It all boils down to the ol' "haves vs. the have nots". Those that have everything want more and those that have nothing want just a little bit of what the "haves" have [which the "haves" gaurd niggardly]. If an album is good; I'll buy the damn thing for the cover art or linear notes or just to support the artist....even if I have already downloaded the whole album off of kazaa. Make your product better, music industry....make us want to own the whole damn album and yer income will expand. Hell, if I had half the "haves" haves, I'd have a hard time halfing half-hearted, half-assed albums from has-beens.....word.
