wow, i've read all these posts and everyone has very great opinions. i agree, johnny depp is gorgeous, but i'm afraid that may be the only reason many people would like for him to play this role. he is a brilliant actor, which many have mentioned, but i think he should get more credit for that rather than the fact that he is (whether he likes it or not) a sex symbol. i would love for him to get this part, not only because he's a great actor but also because him and burton work so fantastic together. i also think christopher walkin would be terrific as willy! perhaps tim will stumble upon these posts and maybe consider walkin for the role, wouldn't that be interesting? and although many have pointed out that he looks quite old for willy many have ceased to notice that johnny looks a little too young? i guess make-up could fix that for either of them though, aye? i do wonder how johnny can look so young at the age of 40...well anywho, what about marilyn manson? i think he would be superb for this role! without his make-up he looks just the right age, and his fans have been waiting forever for him to get this oppurtunity, i'm sure. the idea of giving this role to someone who is less famous just doesn't work, i'm sorry. i think this film would be better off with a well known actor so it's even more enjoyable than it already will be to fans, not to mention the money it will rake in. perhaps burton isn't as interested in the money as he is in the film itself, but i don't see what difference it would make otherwise. i guess i should quit babbling now. good day.

Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka is too perfect to put into words. I think Johnny Depp being Willy Wonka is much better than Christopher Walken being Willy. It just makes more since! Johnny Depp is awesome and would be perfect for the part. Especially after seeing Pirates of the Carribean and seeing Jonny Depp in it. He has a slippery kind of off personality as Jack Sparrow. It would be even more perfect for him to be Willy. Johnny Depp just has that Willy Wonka charm.

Johnny Depp of course will be a great Willy Wonka. He also has no problem looking a bit older either.. remember him bald in Fear & Loathing?

I think Christopher Walken could be Charlie's grandfather if he has to be. Floating around in the bubble room would be perfect for him!

BUT, the main thing we have to worry about is.. What little punk are they going to hire to be Charlie?? The Original Charlie was SO great, but he was kind of a pansy. What kid are they going to get now??

first of all burton is completely and totally a genius. He always casts his films well. So I am not afriad that he'll make a mistake in casting the part of wonka, (so we can all breath easy believing that johnny will be wonka) as for walken...can be a bit too cheesy for the role, Johnny is talented enough to fill the shoes of wilder, and not make a joke of this classic. And since burton is directing we dont have to worry about it being a joke anyway.

All right, guys, we all know that God did an extra special job when he made Johnny Depp. BESIDES the fact that he's scrumptious, the thing to focus on here is Johnny's talent. Which, I may say, is absolutely brilliant! This role has Depp written all over it! He'll be positively wonderful, and we need not worry with Tim Burton! Yes, but Walken has several years of formal dance and song training that would be imperative to a good Wonka character. Along with his morbid and playful nature, he is a natural fit to the role.

Good point. Me and some of the krew have talked about this and decided Charlie will make or brake the movie, though with Johnny Depp or Christopher Walken as Willy it will still be worth seeing. As for Ms. Salt I believe the young girl from Matilda could play that role well if anyone. We must keep in mind that good kid actors that can play spoiled and afraid are hard to come by. Devito as Umpa Lumpa???

Most of you are going on about how Jonny Depp is perfect for the role as he's gorgeous, but does the actor playing Willy Wonka have to be gorgeous?? Is that really a must? I'm sure Willy Wonka wasn't made out to be a god in the looks department in the book, and Gene Wilder made an excellent Wonka, and no offense intended, wasn't particularly gorgeous. Saying that, Jonny Depp would make a good Wonka, but not cause he's gorgeous! I also think that Daniel Day Lewis and Tim Burton himself would be great for the part. The movie is gonna be great whatever, and is gonna get the dark makeover that dahl deserves.

I agree that id Danny Elfman does the score for Wonka, it will be even more amazing. Elfmans scores are always satisfying, particularly for Batman. The score finished the film nicley. Cant wait for this movie!!

I see where your coming from...we should not rely on just another pretty face, but i think that Mr. Depp could breathe new life into the wonka persona. In entertainment weekly Depp was careful not to tread on hallowed ground, ie;(mess with or try to mimic gene wilder's performance.)He,(Depp)did say he would need to take it to a different level.

Tim Burton is a frootcake who is all about weird artsy fartsy movie magic. He did absolutely no justice to Batman so who knows what will come of this. I totally dig some of his other flicks especially the timeless cinematic Edward Scissorhands, in which he worked with Depp. Byfar Willy Wonka has more potential than Batman ever did as a Burton film gone twisted and horribly RIGHT! But I will never forgive him for the outragous crap that is forever more his rendition of Batman. Please do wonders with this classic creep fest, make it as magnificently askew as the brilliant A Nightmare Before Christmas.

What do you mean are they sleeping together? Burton obviously sees how talented Depp is. While Walken is good, there is no one I can picture better for the role. Besides, the new movie might not even be a musical. The book was supposed to be dark, and the original turned it into a kids movie. The reason there hasn't been another Wonka movie is because the Dahl estate was not happy at all about the first one. They thought it was too happy. Besides Burton was their first choice. And when you think about it, all these children are dying gruesome deaths. Wonka is crazy, and Depp is very versatile. I have no doubts that he would be excellent as wonka.

Tim burton is one of the darkest and most brilliant directors of all time (not saying there isn't other brilliant directors.) Burton knows how to make movies, and he knows how to cast them well. If Johnny Depp is cast as Wonka I don't think he'd play the role, I think he'd become it. He is one of the most versatile actors I've seen, and even though some of the films he's played in haven't been so wonderful, his performance has been. I'm a huge Wonka fan, and I'm completely exstatic becuase Burton is going to direct the remake, and if Johnny Depp get's to role as Wonka I'm sure the movie will be the Charlie and the Chocolate factory all of the fans of the original film and book have always wanted. I'm not saying another actor wouldn't be divine, but I think Johnny Depp is "The One". OR perhaps even Mr. Brian Warner (Marilyn Manson) I know that Manson is a huge fan of Willy Wonka. Just check out his hindered and dark sarcassim or Portrait of an American Family. Willy Wonka was/i s his favorite movie of all time, and I'm sure if he got the role it would be great as well. Although I'm still sticking with Johnny Depp on this one, Brian Warner would make an excellent 2nd choice if this role is denied by Depp (Why would he do a thing like that though?)** A side note** Burton and Depp make an excellent Pair. Although the films they've made in the past are a bit gothic/ Dark. It's through the morbid Curiousity of these films that makes them so wonderful, and beautiful need I say. This due to the great direction of burton and the versatillity of Depp and... THE COMPOSERS. The music in these films glues al the pieces together. I'm sure Willy Wonka wil have an excellent sound.**

Depp would be great. No doubt there -- e could really pull it of.

But so could Walken. I think we are fast to want to remake the magic that Wilder brought to the role, so we think that the actor should be the same age as Wilder when he made the first film. But if you really think about the story, Wonka is looking to retire. So it kinda makes more sense that he would be older? And Walken has all the quirks and talent to pull off Wonka as well.

I would be happy either way.

Manson may have been good too, but if he were Wonka too many groups would ban the movie in protest.

Paul Bettany would be ok but again, seems too young for a guy looking to retire.

Johnny Depp does well in anything that he does, even in the oddest parts. Gene Wilder was good...... but Johnny will finally be able to bring the movie to new heights, where it should be! I can't think of anyone more perfect for the role! And Tim Burton is awesome, some of his movies might not have been accepted, but I love them especially "Edward Scissorhands" one of Johnny's best movies. With Buton and Depp together this movie is sure to be a smash, I'll be the first in the theater when it comes out! I LOVE you Johnny!

I'd have to agree with most of you...Johnny Depp would be the best actor to play this part! Although Christopher Walken would be rather interesting...but still..I'd choose Depp over Walken.. and as for Manson, weeeell I guess he would be...ok...but he isn't really an actor...I don't think hes ever really acted..has he? Correct me if I'm wrong. And I think for a movie of this magnitude (cuz its probably gonna be pretty big since the original was a classic), a more expereinced actor should act as Willy Wonka. So..I think an Johnny would be would be absolutely perfect! He just has that certain way of acting.

Johnny Depp is not "replacing" Gene WIlder. Wilder did his work and it was fantastic. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is going to be quite different, believe me. It's going to be truer to dahl's story, and with Burton's direction & Depp's talent, this movie will be brilliant. Stop yapping about Johnny not being able to work as Wilder did. He's not supposted to. He's going to bring Wonka to a level you didn't see in the previous movie. Be patient. I find it extremely interesting how many people are so quick to criticize with such zeal something that has yet to undergo production! And how many successful movies have you made? Believe in the abilities of your fellow human beings. Sit back and relax, you may find that it is something you never dreamed of.

I dunno how some of you say that johnny depp is gay or not a good actor or over-rated or anything of that sort, or that there shouldn't be a remake because evrybody wants one! um, sweetheart..he was nominated for an OSCAR..to be more specific, an academy award..a GRAMMY is a music award..how old are you anyway?

i too have met him, and while yes, i find him stunning in looks, i found him more importantly to be charming, and engaging..he couldnt have been more friendly to me than if he were one of my oldest dearest friends..i met him 7 years ago at a creative writers guild seminar in which a friend of his was speaking (i wont mention the name) his friend, like the rest of the seminar guests, were given a booklet of our writings. a short story of mine was included, and read aloud by myself during the seminar..after my reading and during an intermission, i stepped outside to have a smoke..i look to my left and there walking towards me was johnny.. he stood next to me and pulled out a hand rolled cigarette from a leather pouch..i happend to still have my lighter in my hand, so i lit his smoke for him..he was quiet for a second and then he began to speak..he mentioned to me that he liked my story, and thought me an excellent writer with a wit he very much enjoyed (his own words) what he said after that took me aback..he questioned if my hair was truely red..to which i replied "of course.. the drapes match the carpet!" his laughter broke the ice, and while i was initially star struck over him standing next to me, (it caused me to be so shy, that i was purely shaking and was hard pressed to utter a single word)our casual conversation that we had during a 20 minute smoke made the nervousness dissapear..it was like he wasnt this big bad actor hottie "johnny depp"...for that brief period he was just "johnny" and if you ever get the chance to truely "meet" johnny..you'll know what i mean.

i shall be wonderfully happy for him to play our dear mr wonka...he was born for that role, and while i found gene wilder the best then, ill find johnny a new breath of fresh air awesome enough to rejeuvenate the movie for a whole new generation now..he will do the movie a great justice, and tim burton will finally make the movie just as the book is..dark with an underlying sinister vibe..i hope it becomes a reality.

oh, and by the way, ive read many of the posts on this forum..and most of them i find delightfully teeny-bopper like...im imagininging that alot of the girls on this thread are quite young..yes, he is a 40 year old man...but damn if hes still hot inspite of it..

there ive said it too..and while im an old girl (30-something, cant divuldge more than that, or therefore id have to kill you) I DONT THINK THAT EITHER MYSELF OR A YOUNG GIRL WOULD APPRECIATE BEING SODOMIZED...even if it is johnny depp.. he would at least have to treat me to dinner, a movie, and a few tequilla shots first (slurped from his belly button)
