After being pulled by Fox after its third season, Family Guy appears to be back for more. A direct-to-DVD feature-length Family Guy is in the early stages of discussion.

That's right, and bring on the flames, I don't care because it's true. It was a third-rate Simpsons knockoff. Terrible writing that relied entirely on wink-wink self-parodying of the fact that it was an animated show, and so "stuff doesn't have to make sense, so it's funny". Direct-to-DVD is too good for it.

I don't understand why people continually compare Family guy to The Simpsons. I think they are (not necessarily equally, but) both brilliant shows. Family Guy definately has their comedic timing down.. even if it takes them 7 minutes to mow someone down with a machine gun!

It was a great show, maybe not as good as the Simpsons but ten times better than most of the other crap sitcoms out there. "No, I don't take coupons from giant chickens, not after last time..."

Anyone who thinks The Family Guy was just a Simpson?s knock-off isn't grown up enough to get it. When it first came out I thought the same thing, then I watched it and laughed my ass off. Those people who don't like it have every right not to- but to say it had "sucko writing" shows that either you're too young to get a lot of the inside jokes, don't "get" Monty Python either, or you are watching to find a reason to hate it.
I bet it's the first one. Why? Because it was mentioned that it "sucked" because of its "wink-wink self-parodying of the fact that it was an animated show, and so ?stuff doesn't have to make sense, so it's funny?.?
Everything on that show made perfect sense. I can't help it that you couldn't understand it. Just deal with it and stop whining about it! When you?re a big boy (or girl), you might understand the humor.

The format of each episode as a story riddled with mutiple flashbacks is incredible! The writing draws upon cultural references from a variety of mediums and eras, which I think makes it creative and informed. It is a classic series and it was a shame that it was ever canceled.

I'm glad you decided to point out one of the best flashbacks in the history of television - the chicken fight (Episode: Da Boom ~ for the person who has failed to watch the show with an open mind). Sure it didn't "make sense" but that is what makes it so funny, its randomness. Sure you can say that it is "stupid" because it is random, but that would just make you ignorant and close-minded.

I totally agree with CyanCubanist. Perhaps the humor is too refined for the likes of some of you at times, perhaps its too witty. Indeed, I too believe that some of you are just watching to point out its nonexistent faults. The idea of a "direct to DVD movie" would possibly defeat the very thing that Family Guy needs to get back on the air: fans. If it were shown in theatres, it would get much more money, and that much more when it did come to video/DVD. Enough of flaming the haters, we should feel sorry for those who don't appreciate the complex and colorful satires and jabs at past and present society....maybe they'll grow up...and then again, maybe my hair will be set on fire...by pure luck...

I whole-heartedly concur with Mr. Murray. The Family Guy is a show that is built upon randomness, intelligently witty jokes and puns and pure political incorrectness. It is these features that make Family Guy a worthwhile show and its humor directed towards our over cautious society about political incorrectness. I feel sorry for anyone who does not get the humor, but then for those who do not get the jokes and puns it is beyond their grasp and quite possibly their intellectual capacity. So go back to your dick and fart joke shows, and don?t bother to comment on a show that is over your head.

If Family Guy is a rip-off of the Simpsons, thamn so is almost every other sitcom on fox and many sitcoms on other networks. So it's about a dysfunctional family. That means it's a simpsons rip-off? And while the Simpsons are amazing and maybe one the most well-loved and influential animated sitcoms ever, the episodes have gotten worse in the last couple of years. Family Guy was something new and it was hilarious. I agree that it is kinda like a Simpsons-South Park mix, but so what? How could a series that mixes two of the best and most popular animated shows on television be bad? The writing is great, the humor is unique, the characters are perfect, and it's a fantastically hilarious show. If you don't like it, why don't you go watch The Pitts or Friends or Everybody Loves Raymond or whatever unfunny crap it is you like to watch. Or you could watch me kick you in the nuts, that would be real funny!

I'm sorry, apparrently you must not get half the jokes in there, because it is absolutely the funniest show I have ever seen. They make fun of everything even themeselves, and the jokes come with such frequency and quality that you barely have time to stop laughing at one before the next knocks you to the floor. The complete randomness of some jokes are part of the charm. This in addition to its complete disregard of political correctness, are what make this show sensatonal. There is no comparison between simpsons and family guy except that they are both animated at about the same quality. Family guy is by far superior in its comedic value. In a world where people take everything way too seriously and everything has to be PC I enjoyed being able to watch a half an hour of great comedic writing that didn't hold back evey week. I only hope that the Family guy Movie will hold up to the high standards that the show set, because if it does it will be the funniest movie of all time.

I just bought the family guy DVD, Holy crap it's funny I am only 14 and I would say I got taste and I love family guy. There is no doubt family guy is one of the funniest shows there is. I don't understand what some people have against it, just because its a family with some of the same qualities as that of Simpsons doesn't mean its a knock off. After all since when do you see Santas little helper talking, or maggie trying to kill marge. IT JUST DOESN'T HAPPEN.
Look the point is simpsons is a funny program and so is Family guy so i couldn't give less of a damn about what some people say about it being a knock off, as it makes me laugh, and thats all its there for, don't hate it just because you think its some cheesy knock off, find a better reason, like you don't like how Stewie was trying to kill his mother in the first episode.

Having grown up watching the simpsons at the age of sixteen i was ready forsomething funnier. That just happened to be "The Family Guy." Sure i still like "The Simpsons" But, After watching three episodes a day every night of the week i grew tired of it. With "The Family Guy" each episode was fresh with new jokes that had yet to be played out like so many episodes of "The Simpsons." "The Family Guy" Offered a newer updated family that was from the year 1999 and not 1989. I beleive that a revival of the show would be a great success provided the station refuses to make it the "Bithch Show" (Slap it around) like Fox did. The characters are funny and at least Stewie and Brian speak which makes the show more unique. and i close with a quote from Episode "Brian Wallows, Peter Swallows."

Family Guy was a great show, and like many other great shows on FOX, it found an early death. Before Family Guy my favorite show was The Simpsons. Family Guy quickly replaced the Simpsons for the top spot. You can say FG is a ripp off of other show, most people who say this didn't watch it with an open mind. Yes a few jokes were common among other show, but many more show stole jokes from Family Guy, including a few stolen by The Simpsons. But in the end, it was the greatest show ever and Im sure the movie would be great also.

Seth (the creator) just goes balls out. he doesn't stop for PC and will offend everyone, but he does this equally. Just the fact that this sense of humor is still out there for all of the people with that kind of sense of humor is remarkable. This is such a groundbreaking show for the UN-PC. In conclusion, i love the show and a movie would help broaden the fan base and bring hopes of the show coming back

Family Guy was picked up by Cartoon Network. And the only thing that happened was success. It has higher ratings than David Letterman and Jay Leno. It is drawing 1 one million viewers per show. Fox really ****ed up. I would be delighted to see a movie.
And about it being compared to The Simpsons, I'm amazed at how long such an unfunny show has been around and why the funniest show,FG, was cut before it had a chance. All the loyal simpsons fans I'm sure you have a friend who loves FG, go watch a few of the episodes and you will be amazed.

apparently you don't have a sense of humor cus Family Guy is awesome. I don't see how you can be a Simpsons fan and not a Family Guy fan. To me they seem to be somewhat similar in the type of humor they use. Even if Family Guy does seem like a rip off, who cares, its funny as hell and thats all that matters. Plus, The Simpsons doesn't have a talking dog that drinks martinis, they don't have a baby who wants to take over the world, and they sure as hell don't have Quagmire who I think is the greatest character ever!!!

The humour (forgive the British spelling) in this show is so diverse that you would have to be pretty dull not to even chuckle. The esoteric references are extremely funny to those who catch them (such as the Du Mont network) and the show makes fun of pop culture, including itself. The irony of what we actually like as a viewing audience is displayed, showing the true ridiculity (patent pending on that word) of culture. (Example - who here actually liked the song "Do you really want to hurt me"?)
Family Guy is a superb show with many polydimensional characters whose personalities bounce off each other in such a natural way. Seth MacFarlane is a real jewel in the word of humour and writing. His obscure references and esoteric wit will be sorely missed here. Family Guy Movie! Yes! Please!

family guy is prehaps the most underrated show. it may not have the hypes like many of its rivals (simpsons etc) but in my mind its the funniest show in its genere. fox is a moron to cancell the show.

ive been a huge fan off the simpsons since day one and i honestly though nothing would be funnier than it. But family guy blows it away. people say family guy rips off the simpsons if people have watched both show they will find that the simpsons actually copy family guy for gags. eg the flashback where peter and louis get held up in their car by gunmen peter gets out saying thanks strange lady. that was then seen in the simpsons in mexico when the same happens and bart does a runner down the road. I have converted at least 10 people to watching family guy who said oh no thats sh1t i would show them an episode and have gone and bought the dvd thats why sales have been so high.show watch the episode holy crap or death is a b1tch and I gurantee you that they will be hooked. wanna talk more about family guy email me on steve2584@hotmail.com

"Family Guy" is a rip-off of "the Simpsons" in the same way that "the Simpsons" can be considered a rip-off of "Wait 'till your father gets home", an old animated sit-com with the basic family structure found on either of its predecessors. To some extent, all everything that exists is a copy of that which came before it, albeit enhanced version of it. "Family Guy" should have simply have been viewed as a natural part of the progression of animated comedies rather than a body/gag snatcher.

Oops! That should have been 'successors' but I was hesitant to use any word too similar to 'suck' when writing of "Family Guy". If the 1,000,000 people who tuned in to watch it on Cartton Network's Adult Swim would buy a copy of the Dvd for themselves and another as a gift to an uninitiated friend or family member, then they'd have 2,000,000 copies sold, not entirely too shabby.

I don't know if this has been pointed out yet but if you believe Family Guy is a ripoff of The Simpsons then you need to watch the South Park episode called "The Simpsons Already Did It." It explains it all.

i love both the simpsons and family guy, but anyone who doesn't think family guy is a BLATANT ripoff of the simpsons is just being naive. peter is a carbon f*cking copy of homer. family guy is basically the simpsons with an edge. it's much more politically incorrect which is probably why it was cancelled. still, to whoeve said that family guy has done something that the simpsons has not: stayed funny, all i have to say is: 3 seasons vs. 14 seasons. you do the math. the simpsons is still funny, the stories are just getting too random (i.e. the simpsons are going to __________). even if it werent cancelled family guy, as great as it is, never could have lasted half as long as the simpsons and stayed as good. peace.

How in the world can you call Futurama a rip-off of the Simpsons? A creator can't "rip-off" his own creations. Futurama and Family Guy are both much funnier than the Simpsons ever was. Family guy is way better then the simpsons. The simpsons doesn't even make me laugh its turned into a gay F.R.I.E.N.D.S type show. the jokes aren't funny and it's got too many morals. But in family guy its funny from begininnig to end! you can't go an episode without laughing unless your dead. The Simpsons used to be my favorite show on tv. But lately, as in the last few sucks, it's started to suck horribly. The family guy is absolutly brilliant, and it's better than any episode of the simpsons. The "wasted talent" episode that parodies Wllly Wonka is just sheer genius.

You can burn in hell! That was one of the funniest tv shows of all time. It teached us lessons like how to deal with obesidtey and what to do if your wife is poed. it also teaches us how to mate with green women oh wait thats star trek. aslo it tells us that jesus was really the incredible hulk and that you can have a jabba the hut relative.

family guy is to what Ren and stimpy did to cartoons in their era...it stated a new revolution in animated shows. This show is original, funny as hell, and goes beyond all other cartoons when it comes to controversial jokes. BRING THE SHOW BACK FOX!!!

I recently went on a DVD rampage and bought the first three seasons of the Simpsons, and the two vols. of Family Guy.
Watching the Simpsons was a total shock. The first season of course was slow, but picked up the pace by the sixth ep: (Homer as Bigfoot). Season two and three are masterpieces. "Bart the Daredevil" has one of the funniest sight gags ever in TV animation (Homer over the gorge). They are well written with a Homer who still went to work and cared about his family.
While I enjoyed the fact that Homer became a complete moron over the years, the freshness of the current seasons are missing. Season two and three are all time classics, which could be shown today and get higher ratings than what the Simpsons are pulling now.
I've been a Family Guy fan since the pilot episode. I even have a cat named "Tewey" named from "Stewie". I lost track of the episodes during the second season because they kept moving it around on FOX. I didn't see one episode from season three.
I thought the weakness of the first season was their reliability on old TV shows with twisted plots. Now that I've watched all three seasons, I'm glad to say the show really matured by the third season. I was crying from laughing so hard. I have to admit when Stewie told Peter to play the lonely man music from "The Incredible Hulk", I was on the floor (it was my fav. show as a kid).
As for those who say the writing is poor I can give one example which is pure genius.
During the episode "Dammit Janet", Stewie makes a pit trap at the playground and entices his victims to fall through a pile of leaves. Once Stewie closes the hatch and walks away, he sings the first line from "Another One Bites the Dust". Now the writers could've taken the cheap way out (which is what you see on "Friends", "Will and Grace", etc.) and just say the title of the song.
That's why Family Guy is very popular with people who enjoy biting satire, including a lot of british comedy.

he worked with me on the simpsons for a VERY short time. Then he went off and wrote a show about pop culture, it may be funny, but is uninspired and should not be making new seasons, the simpsons suck these days, but family guy was NEVER an original cartoon series. Every episode mimicked american pop icons, it's easy to copy someone else, thats why it doesnt matter if its funny, Seth got fired from the simpsons, and wrote the show out of spite.

I just thought I'd post on this thread that's two years old. Also, I'm going to keep the original title because its completely outdated. The Family Guy is now back on the air on the FOX network, and I've also recently seen the movie. Also, I would like to point out that Seth MacFarlane as well as the rest of the writers of the Family Guy consist of raw comic genius.
