Weekend Top Ten Box Office Films

I haven't seen How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, nor do I plan to. But I did just see Shallow Hal, which does fine justice to the otherwise uncomfortable predictability of other films in the chick flick genre.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations:

1.How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days$24.1 million
2.Shanghai Knights$19.8 million
3.Chicago$10.7 million
4.The Recruit$9.5 million
5.Final Destination 2$8.7 million
6.Deliver Us from Eva$7.1 million
7.Kangaroo Jack$5.9 million
8.Biker Boyz$4.0 million
9.Darkness Falls$3.8 million
10.The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers$3.4 million

Shallow Hal is a Chick Flick?   > reply

Posted by Jack (jack@dtheatre.com) on February 10, 2003 1:47 PM

I've never seen Shallow Hal. However, I'm not sure that it fits into the "Chick Flick" Category. A chick flick would have to inlcude (depending on the target audience) the likes of  Chris Klein, Freddy Prince, Jr., Nicholas Cage, Matthew McConaughey or anyone from Friends. Then it would have to be directed by Adam Shankman or some BS director like that (or even a good director like John Madden).

Shallow Hal on the other hand stars Jack Black! And is directed/produced by the Farrelly Brothers who are most famous for Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary!

I was surprised, but I speak the truth. Besides Office space has Jennifer Anniston, is not in any way a chick flick.

To put a more precise description to it, a chick flick is a "romantic comedy" That has various plot twists that "unexpectedly" involves an "unlikely" couple somehow getting "together".

Some Chick flicks are okay but lots of them are boring and predictable. Well, I guess it's the same with any movie genre.

Office Space is not a chick flick but it does have romance and comedy, various plot twists and a couple getting together.

Maybe we should compile of list of rules to define the genre.

How about those rules?   > reply

1- One or both characters are engaged to someone else.

2-One or both of them will do stupid or risky things to get the other.

3-Their friends (maybe mutual) are trying to hook them up.

4-One of them is heartbroked and leave, and the other runs to get him/her after the departure (airport, train station)

5-They kiss each other at the end, even if they didn't have sex during the movie.

My girlfriend dragged me to see 'The wedding planner' a while ago. Man, it was the most predictable and pointless piece of crap I'd ever seen, it was like the under seige 2 of chick flicks.

With the difference that Katherine Heigl is hotter than J Lo.

But don't see her taking a crap, cause love will go away.

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure I'll never encounter that eventuality.
