Dark Horizons has coverage of a set for The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise. The cricket ground at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth "is being turned into a Imperial Army Parade Ground, complete with multiple tents, 300 or so extras, 50 horses and canons." It's a very large, grassy area whose surroundings will be "replaced with a CG scene of a Tokyo street circa 1870."

This is just gonna be another white people film trying to properly portray and experience the "bushido" samurai spirit......im (ill summarize the story for all of us) jusdging from the trailer, im guessing some white guy came to japan, had some tiny struggles, hooked up with the hottest japanese chik alive during the time, and some how will become the best samurai ( able to perform matrix like moves combines with all the anime ripp off moves) . This would probably be posible if he grew up in japan.....but he suppusedly is like a tourist....Like as in....the two sworded style "niten ichi ryu" that he supposedly knows how tu use....is like freakin hard tu learn...But ill watch this movie jus to see how historically inaccurate itll be....

This is sad..people always misinterpret everything..I mean not to be racist or anything..but unless you start training with a sword at a young age...there is no chance in hell you are going to be the best darn freakin samurai..in the trailer when I saw Tom in the armor of a samurai i wanted to laugh. I train with a sword and i practice martial arts and im not claiming to be an expert or anything..but ive been training for a bout 3 years with a sword. People misinterpret everything..martial arts itself has become a joke..I dont even want to see this movie..this looks horrible and will prolly make the white guy look better than the japanese people anyways.

This movie has been stolen.  The scripy was stolen from 2 writers, Aron and Matt also known as the Benay Brothers.  It was reviewed, and than said to be rejected, but than copied.  It is another theft in the movie buisness.  I know, the real writers ae my cousins.

Historically Speaking   > reply

Though I agree that sword work would take years of practice to even be close to perfect, my main concern is how historicly accurate the set will be. Obviously the story may not be as accurate as any other perfect samurai movie, but historically speaking, it may kick the crap out of all those other ones. My personal opinion is that this movie will depict the history as accurate as it can. I am still psyched to see this movie, despite it haveing Tom Cruise in it; I don't like him.

ok fair enough a guy wud most likely not be able to learn how to use a sword so perfectly or infact pull off some of the moves i hope are in this film. everybody complains about how historically inaccurate it will be, but i say if u want to learn the true facts go to a library, this is a film and its made to entertain, and i hope it does, so for once can people just watch a movie and have fun watching it rather than pick at every detail, u will enjoy it a lot more that way.

I totally agree with this article and "SAMURAI MY A$$". I hate when a white guy gets to be the greatest samurai ever. That's not fair! I've taken kendo (which is japanese sword fencing to put it in lightess terms) for like five years and like I'm pretty good (for a kid lol) but there is no way that anyone can get that good in such a short time. English style of fighting is totally different than japanese or even asian fighting. So it is so like never gonna happen.
Tom Cruise is a really cool actor but I wish he had not signed up for such a stupid movie. Japanese are proud people why should we have to deal with such a horrible and unrealistic movie such as this.

White guy. Hired to go to Japan. Gets beaten up by some rather nasty looking Choshu warriors. Joins them. Basically tries to say I UNDERSTAND Japan, your people and your supposedly dying culture. I will stick up for you guys! We, in the West are the barbarians! Oh, my heathen past! Begone!!

This movie is bollocks. There's supposedly something called the "samurai spirit" which the whitey director Zwick wants to lament about. Oh, how much we respect Japan!! We love Japan!! Dont adopt our Western ways!! All he really wants to do is lay the main actress!!

Japan is not interesting. It's normal.

Even though the movie isnt accurate and it has a man that  is able to master the sword in 6 months, the true meaning of the movie is dying for a cause that you you live for. this is what the world that we live in needs. Greed has possesed us all and the merchants that were once the lowest class are now some of the most powerful businessmen today. it is time that some of the old ways are brought back. and yes, i am caucasian and i started taking lessons in kenjitsu a year prior to this movie's release, but i have a better understanding for bushido than some asians like to admit. i think that if people would open there eyes, some of the old traditions will make a revival. think about it, liars and thieves are controlling the population of the world, they prosper while millions are still poor, and suffering. so instead of arguing whether the movie was bad or you dont like tom cruise, look into the true meaning of the movie, and see what saigo takamori was really fighting for. i hope that this comment opened some eyes, and i welcome any comments/hatemail that anyone may email to me.

HOW THE HELL can you say this film is bad, this is one of the best films ever made. he learns to understand the ways of the samurai whitch i do as well im a modern samurai i knwo what its like and its perfectly reasonable for him to be able to fight like that and if you didnt realise he fights with a rapier whitch has similar attacking techniques to samurai swords fighting. i wish people would stop slaging off this film because they dont understand it. its pathetic. plus that story did (near enogh) happen in history.

This film is only 2nd 2 the lord of the rings.

ok first of all he already knew how to use a sword, not necessarily a katana, but he knew how to fight with one, and another thing, he really didnt fight all that many samurais using the katana, its not  like you have to have the best technique or be well trained to kill someone with one when they have a gun and cant exactly "fight" against the katana....and for gods sake ITS A MOVIE!!! Its suppose to have a hero who can kick ass, my god people, its FICTION. so STFU and enjoy it.

Actually people in Japan are very polite unlike "white" americans. You say hi to someone they tell you to fuck off. America is not the melting pot, its the trash of the world.

Hear hear!!! I watched it and it's a really cool movie, I luved it.  I mean I admire Tom's work, but I must admit this was a little "Matrix"-like, u know, far-fetched.  I'm still getting over the fact that ALL the Samurai's, including Katsumoto and Nebutada died, and Tom was the only one left.  I mean really now.  But still, let's leave all this history stuff for school or educational purposes, and just focus on enjoying a really cool storyline.  I mean, I don't say anything when everybody makes movies in South Africa, and it's all like elephants grazing in the backyard, and bushpeople running everywhere in camouflage.....hahahahahaha.
Njoy this one guys, it's gr8.

Of all the horrible samurai films I've seen this one would have to be the best. At least it had an ending some movies I've seen didn't have one like the Samurais From Hell(the "legendary samurais" I could beat. Anyways if you want to see how bad white people can get go to this "punk" (not really) website http://www.punkhardcore.com oh and I'm a "white" american and I contribute to the trash.
PS America sucks... Your view of america (white barbarians) is actually better than it really is over here.
PS#2 Oh and japanese girls are the best.
