Actress Kim Hunter, who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Stella in the 1951 adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire, died Wednesday in her Greenwich Village apartment from an apparent heart attack. She was 79.
Born Janet Cole in Detroit, her hugely varied film and stage career spanned seven decades. The American born actress has starred opposite the likes of Marlon Brando and Humphrey Bogart only to be blacklisted as a communist during the red-hunting 50s.
Her Planet of the Apes co-star, Charlton Heston, saluted Hunter as "a fine actress and a wonderful person," and remarked that "The world has lost a unique talent."
