The show has gotten much better during the last season, probably due to the ceased activities of Futurama (which being not picked up by FOX is blasphemy) giving Matt more time to concentrate on the Simpsons. They had an episode years back about hot to do just that: freshen up the show. They introduced "Poochy" & a new family member; "Roy". It was a funny episode and rang true. Of course the shows 3rd and 4th seasons were it's best and that had to do entirely with the writing. Right now the Simpsons are watched in more homes than any other TV show in history including Baywatch in its prime, there is no need to even consider stopping such a magnificent show, however I have high hopes that another station will want to pick up Futurama which is currently a far funnier, and much more clever show. The sorry state of television today demands the survival of its few remaining champions.

That's true, Groening recanted, and said the show will go on for as long as it's popular.
However, the first post here is right: the show currently blows. Writing sucks hard, it's a weak shadow of it's former self. The Simpsons used to be my favorite show, it's been sucky since like 1998. The fact that it's so popular doesn't mean it's good, in fact that tends to be a sign that it reeks (example, Friends, Frasier, etc.).

No, The Simpsons beat them out last year or the year before. I think the Simpsons keeps getting better and better and theres no way that futurama could ever takes its place or ever be near as funny. The whole futuistic scene in cartoons is weak and I dont think futurama could ever be as funny. I mean whos gonna replace Homer, that goofy robot? come on. I just think a movie is long overdue. Even that stupid recess show got a movie after like 1 year on the air. Some things just arent right.

The reason why the early episodes were so good and clever was because Matt did the primary writing and was the creative process behind those seasons, likewise thats what he was doing with Futurama, like the Simpsons early episodes, it's about political humor and popular Americana. I vacationed in Rio several years ago, and watched the Simpsons there. People watching laughed when Homer burped, or choked Bart, and when Homer would yell "D'oh". The true humor of the show was something they simply could not understand, Homer making a crack about Watergate and a reference to "Barton Fink". This is what Futurama uses as its fundamentals and why today it is 50 times as funny as the Simpsons, if your going to bash it, then at least watch it. Like the Simpsons 3rd and 4th seasons, it's brilliant, but obviously you must be U.S. cultured to understand its humor, just as I fail to see the humor in "Red Dwarf". Futurams excellence is in its writing.

Did you even read that guys post Moose? You just said the same thing he did. He's not comparing Dwarf to the Simpsons, he said if your not fluent with European culture then its not going to make a lot of sense to you, but if you grew up watching Monty Python, and such, then you appreciate the humor. It's just like watching small children (12 and under) watching the Simpsons, unless they are familiar with political, entertainment, and world news then its difficult to "get". I also love "Red Dwarf".

Uuuuum, yes, I did read it. I was just agreeing, in my own little way. I thought at the time, that it was important to point out that I like Red Dwarf. (I suppose next time I should shorten my reply to "Word, dude"). ;)

The knowledge of US culture sometimes is not needed if the jokes are good, not only related with the country. Anyway, that never stopped network executives from selling any series to the rest of the world. But it's true, we all miss nice comedies by not being locals sometimes.

Your out of your mind, I'm 46, and well cultured and traveled and I still don't get a lot of the Simpsons jokes. One must have a great knowledge of TV, movies, understanding of politics, popular americana, and appreciation for sarcasm.

No kidding, I teach Political Satire to Drama Students at Sarah Lawrence and sometimes I'm stumped while watching the Simpsons.
It's the best, and I think Futurama could be as good some day, but one really can't compare the 2, since they have so little to do with each other.
