$10,000!?   > reply

Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on January 11, 2002 5:12 AM

I can't believe that some people would charge so much to do an audio commentary for their own movie. As for DVD's soon having no special features at all, I don't think this is going to happen because they'll always be promotional interview or 'making-of' films and a couple of deleted scenes or out-takes. I think that true film-makers who really put the effort into their movies will still be happy to contribute to the DVD version for free. Now when's the Back to the future or Indiana Jones trilogys going to come out on DVD?!

Ok dude, we heard you the first time.
Maybe someone should tell the greedy f*cks who want more money for the DVD extras that they are already being over-paid for what they do and that it is in their best interest to give fans and consumers more for their money.
If they are going to live in the VHS age then thats probably where their careers are going to end up.
I dont think DVD producers should pay anyone to do special features, just allow the stars who will do it for free to to be featured on the DVD to help promote themselves and let the greedy, arrogant ones fade into obscurity.  The consumers will know the difference and can make their choice from there.

Who the hell wants to hear an audio commentary by Arnold Schwarzeneggar anyway?

Stop the "Envy Rage" folks   > reply

Do you folks think that no one makes any money off of DVD's?

Why is it OK for producers and distributers to make some extra money off of a DVD release and not the production folks?

Another point. In America we have what is called a capitalist philosophy. This means we are entitled to become filthy rich if we want and can come up with a way of doing it.

Somehow, recently, it has been decided by the masses that certain people make "enough" money and therefore don't deserve to be paid any extra.

Granted, some of the deals for actors and athletes are outrageous but before you condemn the person for asking for so much think about this. Wealthy folks (for the most part) are not foolish with money. If there was no way to recoup these huge salaries then they wouldn't pay them.

And don/'t hand me any line about having to use a certain celebrity because the public demands it. The public has a memory that only lasts as long as the next "cool" person.

So, stop the "envy rage". No one is making the poor producers and others lose any money. It's all greed folks and that's the way business is done. Don't like it, move to central Asia where you don't have to put up with it.

Please, shemp.  Don't hide your prejudice for the poor simple public with that baloney about entitlement.  You are in America and I don't see anywhere in the Constituiton or the Bill of Rights where it says "entitled."  That is by far one of the lamest stunts pulled in a thread in this site.

In the good ole US of A that I live in, we have a CHOICE.  If I choose to by a DVD, I will spend the extra cash for the Special Edition (or otherwise)because I prefer the insight and neat behind-the-scenes stuff.  If DVD's stop offering that option, I'll by the VHS since they cost less and they'll be just as good anyway.  For instance, do you think SW 1, Phantom Menace would have been a runaway success of a DVD if it didn't have the extras in it?  I doubt it.

What ever happend to pride in craftsmanship.  If you want to see some people who cared about what they made check out the special edition DVD's of Fight Club or Se7en and listen to the audio comentary tracks.  You can tell Fincher and Pitt really cared about the work they did on those pictures.  For me, it gave me the satisfaction of knowing that it was money well worth spending. I actually began to realize that they did earn the "millions paid" for those movies.  That is growth pal.  That is insight.  Next time, educate BEFORE you elucidate.

Now go an find someone else "cool" to lambast with your buffoonism.  Ciao.

Ok, so I'm the buffoon yet you agreed with argument.

I was not at all attacking your "choice" moron, merely the incessant whining that occurs when people whine about how much money others make.

Watch out when you simply try to be clever without actually understanding what you've just read.

OK? Buh-Bye

Another thing you missed was that I am one of the poor masses. I make $20.00 an hour.

According to you I should not receive more because of pride in my work.

You my friend are the one who has the prejudice.

I don't think shemp said anything about entitlement. I think the argumnet boil;ed down to "if you can get it, great". Not just the handing over of mony.

Anonymous, gutless, shemp, although I do not disagree with the kernal of the argument we are sharing here, I do disagree with your approach.

You calling me a "moron" is like Einstein calling me a "genius"--it's complimentary.

You are taking some patch work knowledge you obviously picked up in some inner school about capitalism   applied it to a function that is not necessarily "American." It is the fools like you who are dragging this country straight down to the foundation.
You are not "entitled" to be filthy rich.  You are entitled to the "right" to choose to do what you want--filthy rich or poor--I don't care.
Reread and note the difference this time.

As for pride in craftsmanship, note that I am talking about work that is already done.  Comparing your $20/hour (which I doubt) to someone who is not paid by an hourly basis but by the project (E.G like movie stars) just demonstrates how stupid you truly are.

Good night.  Quit swinging from my dee-ack and get a life.

Personally, I don't give a flying fuk how much these movie stars make, just as long as we carry on getting DVD's with tons of cool special features.

To: A Random Shemp

Earning $20.00 an hour does not put you in the poor masses. Especially if you live in the US where (almost) everything is cheap. I earn around $40 per day, and i live in one of the richest, most  expensive countries in the world!

Trying to make more money out of DVD production is greedy.  You think that if the salary limit for an actor like DeNiro was only $1,000,000 he wouldnt still be acting?  You really think he would rather be a lawyer or doctor or something? I doubt it.  Its just greed, and the people who have to pay for it in the end, whether its a 5 minute commentary or interview, are the consumers through slightly higher prices.  If they start asking for money for the extras then it will eventually reach our pockets too.
There are plenty of people looking for their break in show business, it is a highly competitive field.  Some of these slaries are ridiculous like Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson. (Over paid for over acting). If they need to charge a fee for an extra feature as well then thats just bullsh*t.  I dont give a sh*t if its in America or the constitution.  We the consumers shouldnt have to pay.  In fact they should try to give us as much as they can.  Whatever happened to pride in ones work or for the love of art?
