Call me a religious fanatic if you want but i think there's something wrong when we're showing young impressionable kids that it's cool to be a wizard and play around with occult crap like Harry Potter.

Yes you are a religious fanatic.  Maybe if you could get your head out of your as* and just enjoy the books/movies as entertainment everything would be fine.   As for Star War, I hope Episode II is better then that piece of crap Phantom Menace.  Empire Strikes Back is still the best.

I think Harry Potter was a decent movie but it wasn't worth all the hoopla surrounding it months before its release.

RE: Rowling Could Be First Billionaire Writer   > reply

Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on November 26, 2001 8:39 PM

Yeah, nobody cares about them. That is why all of the books are on the bestsellers lists all over the world. That is why the movie has already grossed over $190 million dollars in 10 days. Yeah you're right.

IT'S ONLY A F****** BOOK PEOPLE!!!!

I'm around alot of kids all day and I've yet to hear a one of them give up their religion because of a story!

Do all the people who read Silence of the Lambs terrorize FBI agents?

The Old Man and the Sea did not have me joining the Merchant Marine!

How many folks who read The Wizard of Oz went on to become midgets dancing around a little yellow brick road?

Jesus jump F****** Christ!! I swear, there are times when the intelligence and common sense present in children far outweighs those attributes in adults.

This is obviously one of those times.

And if you want to drag religion into the fray....

Most theologians will be the first to admit that portions of the bible are themselves "fairy tales" told to send a message and drive the point home.

That's all Harry Potter does. It tells tales where good overcomes wrong. That's it. That's all.

Now where did I leave my big blue ox?

RE: Rowling Could Be First Billionaire Writer   > reply

Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on November 26, 2001 9:38 PM

P.S.

I'm also a Jew but I don't go around telling people that a book that tells of a Nazerene born around 5 or 6 A.D. (that's right kids, he wasn't born in the year 0) being the Son of God is evil or wrong.

It seems to me that using the same logic as these Anti-Potter fanatics use then I could ask that the New Testament not be read by anyone as it teaches the "wrong" thing.

Put that in your Chalice and drink it.

Where did I leave my lightsaber?

Profanity is the feeble brain trying to express itself forcefully.

I agree with your assessment, but not your foul language.

RE: Rowling Could Be First Billionaire Writer   > reply

Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on November 26, 2001 10:10 PM

You have no idea what you are talking about.  Entertainment?  You are an idiot.  You can call me a religeous fanatic too.  But I am wiccan.  So, what do you have to say now dumba$$?  The symbols that Rowling uses in the books are not fun and games.  Those symbols have been used for a very long time for very different purposes.  Some of them are "white" symbols and some are "black"  But you just jump to label someone as a "fanatic" or "bible thumper" or whatever else you can think of to fool yourself into believing that because a book uses these symbols in a "fun" way it is entertainment.  Well, I can tell you what is not fun about them.  When someone uses them in the wrong manner because, it IS just a symbol after all.  Right?  Yeah, that's what a puke named Hitler thought when he used the native symbol "swastika" and the lightning bolt to adorn his army.  They are just symbols. Fun, harmless symbols.  Pull your own head out and open your eyes.

RE: Rowling Could Be First Billionaire Writer   > reply

Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on November 26, 2001 10:17 PM

I agree with the wiccan guy.  I mean, sure there are alot of people who jump on the banwagon and try to attack stuff like harry potter and disney movies (southern baptists) but, if they want to be frightened or attack very real symbols of another religion then I think they should be able to.  Isn't that what makes America great, that we can all have an opinion.  Personally, I have never read the harry potter books, but I am not sure that I would want to either.  Would making a movie that films how to sacrifice a human being based on the Satanic Bible be entertainment as long as the cgi murder and torture was cool?  Just a thought.

Yeah, you are right.  Let's take it a step further.  Marilyn Manson music makes me happy.  It is chock full of redeeming, social commentary.  And skinheads aren't preaching hatred of ethnic groups, they are writing happy fiction that makes us all tingle inside.  And after I read "American Psycho" I didn't want to mutilate a womans sexual organs.  But my neighbor did, and that's ok too.  It's all part of the big circle of life.  We deny that what we do has an effect whether we mean it to or not.  But hey, it's all warm happy sunshine wrapped in putrid apathy.

Now, where did I leave my total lack of moral conscience?

RE: Rowling Could Be First Billionaire Writer   > reply

Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on November 26, 2001 10:29 PM

Sometimes the best way to express a forcful thought is through profanity.

A profane word is just that; a word. Words are tools (and to pull from an old cliche, sometimes great weapons as well). To deny use of some of those tools because you risk offending those with "higher" sensibilities is something I choose not to do.

The statement I made needed the baseness of profanity to drive my point home.

Of course, had this been a forumn that was specifically targeting young people,  I would have chosen different words.

To say that one who uses profanity has a feeble mind is short sighted statement at best and an elitist, snobbish statement (as well as attitude) at worst. It also smacks of censorship.

By the way I typed all the *'s in. The "autosensor" did not have to do it for me.

My pegasus has arrived and it is time for me to go.

I do apologize for one thing......

Blabbering on at length, off topic.

I think what you mean to say is that all of the blind sheep who follow the corporate merchandising machine around like a lovesick dog have spent their hard earned pesos on this shtick instead of buying groceries and quality time with billy and susie.  In ten years when some kid walks into a school with a lightning bolt tatooed on his forehead and no respect for human life we should blame who?  Thats right.  His parents for buying him this crap and further pushing him away from any normal existence in the real world!

Ah, my friend, you mistake entertainment and philosophy.

Skinheads teach a philosophy of hate. You are preaching to the choir (as it were) about hate groups. Most Ethnic and religious minorities in America are very aware of their form of entertainment.

Yea, that's pretty damned entertaining how they would love to lynch them up some *n-word*s, faggots, and kikes.

Manson teaches nothing with the possible exception of expressing teenage angst (and overwrought if you ask me).

What makes you think that if somebody is capable of commiting heinous acts upon another human that any particular form of entertainment is culpable.

If someones head is wired wrong, a rerun of Laverne and Shirley might set them off just as easily as any "morally corrupt" form of amusement can.

All I can say is...GOOD FOR HER!  She was a welfare receiving single mum and now she has broug herself out of it and I think she should be comended.  She is a shining example of how you can rise above your circumstances to become something.  I think her stories are entertaining and I enjoyed them.  I don't mind contributing to her pot of gold.  On top of the money she makes, she contributes a great deal back to society by working for literacy and welfare charities.  We should all be inspired by her example instead of being envious of the fact that she actually got what she aspired to.

Talk about a lucky break. I mean come on, a school for witches and wizards, broomsticks, magic, it's hardly anything brand new is it? She just happened to tap into something that people wanted to read about at the right time. As for all the hype and everything, well kids have always got to have a craze, at least it's not as bad as Pokamon.

Ever heard of the expression 'making a mountain out of a molehill'? There all alot more important things in the world to worry about than a simple childrens book that brings enjoyment to many people, besides, I thought encouraging kids to read rather than sitting infront if the TV all day was a good thing. As for teenagers with scar tatoos on their forheads in a couple of years time, mabey if you actually READ the book you would realise that it is not about a group of kids sitting in a circle and chanting but about them making friends and having adventures.

Unfortunately, from the trailers that I have seen, I think Episode 2 is going to SUCK. Portman still can't act a lick, and the guy they picked to play Annakin Skywalker is a whiny bitch-ass.

I like Portman though. Nice looks--pleasant on the eyes--and all the other projects I've seen her in are not too bad.  I believe it's her delivery that is directed by Lucas that really bites.  That wooden, monotone delivery of Queen Amidala really grates.  It's the second worse idea Lucas' come up with next to Greedo shooting first.

The funniest part of the post where the idiot said Harry Potter would be to blame in the future? Where he says that the guy's parents buying him Harry Potter stuff would keep him away from a normal existence or the real world...ummm...just a hint: If every other kid on the planet is into something, including this future mythical psychopath with the lightning bolt tattoo? That MAKES it a normal existence.

Just because you disapprove doesn't change that fact that pop culture is what defines the majority of our shared memories in this world for the last, oh, 100 years.

Your grandparents' foundest memories may be playing baseball on the sandlot. Guess where they learned how to play? It wasn't from Grampa Leonard's fireside discourse. It was from listening to it on the radio...which is, you guessed it, part of pop(ular) culture.

You can try to pretend you're above it, but you are on this website, reading entertainment news. You're sucking down pop culture by the creamy gallon-sized jug, pal.

I've always loved the Books of Magic, even stuck with them through the crappy end of the series, but I like Harry Potter.

Neil Gaiman was asked a long time ago about the Harry Potter/BoM thing. I'm paraphrasing, but basically he said that the similarities are the first thing that anyone who was honestly trying to rip him off would change. Black hair? Make it blond! British? Now he's American! Glasses? No! Gaiman doesn't think that he was ripped off in anyway, and I would think he would be the final word on it.

It's like saying that Daredevil is a rip-off of Superman because they both wear red, fight crime and have alter-egos who wear glasses.

HARRY POTTER has NO business in your Witch Hunting, Bible Thumping, Book Burning idiocy! They are WONDERFUL stories (and that's ALL they are, they are NOT meant to convert anyone into witchcraft) as someone else said, This series of books has been responsible for encouraging MILLIONS of not only KIDS, but adults away from the TV for a little while and get back into READING! What is WRONG with you people that try to condemn this brilliant stuff??? GET a HOBBY (like reading perhaps, I bet MOST of the people that are all "anti" Harry Potter haven't even READ the books!)

And I'll bet you five dollars that 'he' is a 'she', and 'she' will be very wealthy.  There is no doubt about it.

There is no such thing as magic.  Good or bad.  There is no Loch Ness monster, The Yeti isn't real.  Santa Claus doesn't live at the North Pole and there is no god.

Harry Potter is just plain old fun.  And all you nut cakes who think magic is dangerous are at best SILLY.

Her getting children to read again is wonderful, choice of subject matter however is terrible. Anyone can captivate the minds of children with fantasy but this goes beyond and leaves the devistating influences of occult practices. And we wonder why our kids fall into uncontrollable bouts of suicide and deep depression.

Does anyone truly believe that our children deal with "serious bouts of depression" and suicidal thoughts because of the Rowling books - or because of interest in the occult for that matter.  Hmmm lets see... how about abusive parents, sedated childhood and prescription filled puberty, and a government that does not put children first????   When I was young, I remember feeling worthless because I could not ever mangage to live up to my religion's standards (I was catholic) , but I would never say being catholic caused my teen angst.  Hmm, date rape, fear of rejection by peers and parents who treat their children as things they "have" rather than people they "raise" might have a little more to do with it.  Just a thought.

I don't know, call me a skeptic, but it's not okay to let our kids fantasize about magic, where the good guys win.... but it is okay to teach them religions where ritualistic mutilation is not only acceptable but mandatory, or every week you go to church and watch a man in a robe change bread and wine into the body and blood of a man you are suppose to emulate, and then eat.... My point is.... anything can be twisted and construed as being sick or demented.... and since we don't have alot of harry potter fans blowing things up, or causing riots and threatening nuclear holocaust, why don't we just find something else to get our panties in a twist about?

Obviously you haven't read the books, they deal with a young boys growth into his destiny. They delve no more into occult practices than many so called fairy tales and less than most of them.

I've read all of the Potter books. So have my 14 & 11 year-old brothers. They know enough to realize that this is FICTION. I myself have read many other fantasy novels, & loved fairy tales as a child. If the parents make sure that the kids have a solid base in reality anyway, as well as have a good relationship with them, then there shouldn't be a problem like this.

Also, if you're going to attack Potter, never go to a Disney movie, ever again. Stay away from any fairy tale whatsoever. I swear, I have heard so much against Harry Potter, & mostly from people who haven't actually read the books. And, they believe whatever anybody else tells them about the books, many times without ever bothering to confirm that person's information source. Please, if you're going to have an opinion about something like this, make it an informed opinion.

I thought the movie was OK but I have to say her imagination is amazing!  Just goes to prove the book is always better than the film.

If anyone read the book of Jurassic Park: the lost world they would know that the movie was way better. Although that isn't saying much.

I just want to say I love the Harry Potter Books they are the best!!!! I have yet to see the movie but friends said that it was great. As for Harry Potter being bad because of witches and wizards is crap. That is like saying the movie Snow White, and the Wizard of OZ is evil because they have witches to. In Cinedarella they say a spell. That isn't Evil to is it.  Anyway Harry Potter is not bad because of Witches and wizards. Thanks for books that people of all ages can enjoy!!!!
