Bruce Lee to Star in Dragon Warrior?!?!

(VARIETY) In other news Bruce Lee He who is considered the greatest martial artist of the 20th century is expected to star in the upcoming Dragon Warrior.

More than 28 years after Bruce Lee's death, CGI technology will resurrect the kung-fu icon to star in the $50 million-budgeted chopsocky actioner "Dragon Warrior."

ShinCine acquired rights to Lee's likeness from Concord Moon, which represents the Bruce Lee estate and is overseen by Lee's widow, Linda Lee Cadwell, and his daughter, Shannon Lee.

Pic is being financed by ShinCine Communications, a major Korean film company partially backed by Samsung and headed by Chul Shin. Shingle is seeking candidates to operate a stateside office in Los Angeles.

Now in its third draft by Korean and Japanese writers, "Dragon" will be translated and further refined for an English-language production.

The project has already spent four years in development and will be the first that ShinCine has produced for the American marketplace. However, Shin told Daily Variety that ShinCine has already identified two other English-language projects that it would like to produce.

"Dragon Warrior" would be the first theatrical feature to digitally re-create a character in a major role, but ShinCine has not selected the studio that will be primarily responsible for the CGI work.

Shannon Lee said the family agreed to do this project, "because we believe in ShinCine's and Mr. Shin's enthusiasm and commitment to making a first-rate film."

Bruce Lee was a veteran of Hong Kong cinema when he first reached mainstream American audiences in 1966 as Kato in the television series "The Green Hornet." He starred in films such as "Fist of Fury," "Way of the Dragon" and "Enter the Dragon." He died at 32 of a brain edema.

Founded in 1988, ShinCine has previously produced 15 titles including the current Korean B.O. hit "Wild Beauty" and the controversial 1999 pic "Lies."

The Lee family was repped by attorney Steve Younger of Manatt, Phelps and Phillips and by A. Ian Keasler of Concord Moon.

This is the beginning of the end of the "traditional" motion picture and the start of a new reality for Hollywood; namely, the resurrection of deceased movie stars into brand new movies.  While it might be thrilling to see a new W.C. Fields or Humphrey Bogart movie, it also raises innumerable issues.

what a disgraceful thing to do he's dead can't they deal with that. I'm still interested in seeing it just to see what it's like and because i'm a bruce lee fan but but also sounds kind of stupid how are they going to know how bruce would planned out the fight scenes with the choreographer. Hmm hmm sounds like another game of death... maybe they'll hold a card board cut out over someone's face for old times sake and get some crappy actor to pretend that he's bruce(Game of Death if your lost) lee and look like a novice martial artist and sound like an extreme homosexual when trying to imtate bruce's fighting taunts. on second thought maybe i' won't see it.

If you feel like watching a really bad movie go ahead and watch game of death.
The saddest part of the movie is the fact that they made a whole damn movie around The original fight scenes bruce filmed before his death. So for 15 mintues of fight scenes they decided to slap on another 75min. (from what I read in "Words of the dragon Vol.1" that the movie contained nothing of the original script of the movie) of sloppy mess. If you want to see the fight scenes, well their not his best but their still pretty good.

I tend to agree with author of this post.  Using orignal scenes of his fights were great for those films but may not be appropriate for this one.  Why doesn't the director find a sutible replacemet for the part.  While at the same time be true Bruce Lee abilities.  Leave the dead rest in peace.

RE: Bruce Lee to Star in Dragon Warrior?!?!   > reply

Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on November 17, 2001 8:28 AM

wow, this is really lame...

as if it's just what an actor looks like that makes him good.

[well in some peoples minds i can see them thinking that as true]

why would anyone do this?

it could never be bruce, because bruce is dead.

it won't be his voice, his moves, his fight coreography, or anything but his image which was the least important aspect of his acting...

it will all be someones approximation of him, persona by commitiee.

even in animation, the actor is paramount to the part.

so why would you have an actor imitate another actor unless it was anything but a hack job and to cash in on a dead man's name.

use a real actor if the movies plot is any good.

bruce can't carry the film cause bruce is dead and there is no way that this will work as a viable ptoject.

it's not a bogart film if someone else is playing bogart playing the character...

i could see this as a parody or docudrama but not as a feature...

this is highly confusing to me...

maybe the family need money....

still seems like the lowest of the low reasons to dishonour a great actor. such as the commercials with fred astair dancing with a vacuum cleaner....

life is a funny thing .what you grow complacent with is fertile ground for high voltage zap. naturally i look for your point of view in how you use your tangents.so i must guess here you are also guessing which is silly if fun.Errol Flynn and son are difficult to emulate yet that is exactly what they did.if flattery were any more clearly shown then through imitation. it hasn't, it won't. remember to respect all things Bruce and family I don't remember why you wouldn't.

your reply baffles me too.

do you think this is an homage?

i can see that in plenty of roles played by actors and the whole genre is an homage to him.

how can you pass off bruce lee starring in a flick when it's not him but his image only?

i cannot see how this can work, tastefully.

Personally, I don't think it will happen. Years ago, before Starwars Episode 1 went into production I heard rumours that instead of an actor playing OB1 Kenobi they were going to have a CGI version of Alec Guiness as a young man in the movie. If it does happen I still think it'll look weird.

I can certainly understand the attraction a film maker would have toward using the Dragon in a current movie. Today's martial Arts stars are great, but can not compare with the original. Skill, Charisma, Physique, vision, ambition, character, Bruce had it all, but this sounds like a disaster in the making. Every time I see a Coors commercial with the Duke it makes me ill. For one the Duke would never drink a Lite Beer, and two, it's not right taking a screen legend who has passed on and using him for an ad. While this project is obviously on a grander scale, it does not make it right. I'm sure Linda Lee is hoping to cash in as she usually does. Still, if it does get produced, I'd probably watch it when it hits cable.

I reckon that's a mighty fine idea. That Bruce Lee was one hell of a Kung Fu fighting China man. If they cans bring him backs ta life with these com-pu-ter dohickys then that's just fine and dandy as far as I'm concerned.

I think it's a great pioneering step, and I am sure the dialog delivery and film grain will really make for true quality cinema.  And I hear there making "Shrek of the Dragon" next.  With Bruce as the lovable side kick of an Org, or troll or something.

I will sleep better knowing that in my life time, I will see Keanu Reeves back on the big screen after he grows to ugle for his poor delivery to keep his career alive.  A lil special effect touchup and poof Ted's back on film.

What next, colorizing back and white classics?

I think I will wait and see before i stick my foot in my mouth. What if it kicks @$$? After all his family approved it, and I believe that they are more protective of him than you all are. I'm excited for it. This is a tribute, they're not literally resurrecting the dead. OOooooOOO, veddy scaaaady!! Pull down your skirts and enjoy the action. VIVA BRUCE (in any form)!!!

RE: The Dragon   > reply

CGI is like taxidermy: yes there's a beauty to it, but it never looks right somehow. It's nice to know that this technology is now possible... but now that we know we can do it, the big question is should we? Is that what entertainment is now? Taxidermy?
I agree with the earlier post about doing characters by commitee... that never works. The more people you try to please, the more raw brilliance you take away, the more diluted the original idea becomes.
But I don't think I'm opposed to this... I would like to see what happens. The Lee family is behind it... but then the Presley's were behind Lisa Marie marrying Michael Jackson too.  They probably will screw it up, but there's that off chance they will get it right.
I think I'll wait for the video.

"The Dragon Movie" was dubbed "The Linda Lee Movie" by Jeet Kune Do practioners. Jet and Bruce are same height.  Bruce was best Martial Artist in the world but hes dead.... now Jet Li is the master.  Bruce is a Southern styler, Jet Li is Northern styler.  Bruce is hard and straight, Li is fluid and circular.  Lets face it... Bruce is dead.  Theres no need to diss Jet Li because he is the best now and his style is paralell to Bruce's which makes an interesting contrast.  Can anyone say Yin and Yang?

RE: Re: Jet Li is a real child molester   > reply

You know if Bruce was alive he'd tell all of you (especially 100%), to get f*cked.  Do you fools even know anything about Bruce Lee?  He was so adament and enthusiastic about making movies that if there was some way to contact him and ask his permission he would say "YES".  But unfortunately we dont have that luxury so before you unintelligent spoof suckers start talking sh*t it would be wise to try and imagine what Bruce would want, not what you want.  Even if somebody gets a big paycheck at the end of it.  Who cares?  Fans of Bruce will pay anything to see him live on.  There is a CG clip of Bruce which was done almost perfectly  by a very talented woman and I was impressed.  If they can make a movie like that on a bigger budget and bigger 3D teams then Im sure it'll be a hit.  Why not even make it a super-hero film?  Make him fly around and do all the fancy sh*t they have in movies now.  We shouldnt let anus lickers like Hellskitchen limit our imagination, especially when technology is advanced enough to make anything happen.  Reality sux.  Movies should be fun and over the top and thats how Asians have been makeing movies for so many years.
They should get Jet Li to be in it too and have a showdown at the end with CG Bruce and Li.

RE: Re: Jet Li is a real child molester   > reply

Posted by Skullfire (hulacete@ubbi.com) on December 13, 2001 3:03 PM

First of all, I don't remember anyone insulting Bruce Lee; besides, I don't think he would say "F*up" to everybody.
We are free to say what we want, as you did. And the real problem it's that is freaky if you replace real people with CGI, because sooner or later there will be no actors at all, and kids would say "Yeah, Bruce Lee, the cartoon person, I know IT". Could happen.
Last but not least, you know that they could screw it and ruin Bruce's figure and what he represents, a philosophy of life, not an actioon toon of saturday morning.

RE: Re: Jet Li is a real child molester   > reply

And I'm not a fan of the guy, but I do respect him from the little I know of him, more than I do with Jet Li.

RE: Re: Jet Li is a real child molester   > reply

Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on December 15, 2001 12:49 AM

First of all, the generation of kids growing up now wont remember Bruce lee the way we do.  They werent alive when he was.  They wont have as much interest in watching old Kung-Fu flix when they have so many new and exciting ones to see.  The only people who will keep his legend living on is us and martial artists.  The next generation wont give a toss.  They would prefer anyone who is alive and kicking than a legend who has been dead for so many years.  CG is the only way you could keep his messages and his stardom living on.  And even the most Die Hard Bruce Lee fans would support this so called "Resurrection" which I think is just a tribute.  Anyway it doesnt matter what we say here.  Im willing to bet everyone here who complains about the movie before they release it is still going to go watch it when it comes out.
By the way, I think the idea of having Jet fight against the CG Bruce is a good idea.  It would give a good display of their abilities and contrast in their styles.

I thought i'd put my 2 cents in here as I am a martial artist and have been practicing Jeet kune do,
Bruce is like a "shower of the way" to me, he's inspired me to try and achieve exellence in all feilds that I try,
and I am a die hard fan, I would however like to clear up the whole Bruce Lee Jet Li ability comparison thing, First of all I have great respect for Jet and i'm a fan and I catch all his films he's a great actor and thats the word we were all looking for "Actor" Jet Li grew up studying Wushu in China and before he was "discovered" he was part of the China "wushu" team witch is kind of like an olympic competition thing, they don't do self defence it's all about performance, they practice forms or a series of martial arts movements to perfection (basically choreography) and then they perform it infront of judges and win competitions and so forth, kinda like Jacky Chan, although jacky is alot more hardcore, so what you see of Jet on screen is well put together fight scenes with great sound effects and perfect camera angles not ability like Bruce, alot of people say alot of things about bruce and try to downplay his ability and I myself agree that he wasnt "unbeatable" but he was a great man, he single handedly changed action cinema and sure enough most fight choregraphy and ideas these days come from him, he trained like no one else and called himself an ordinary man, his ability was otherworldly, it would be cool to see the new movie alot of people are interested in Bruce Lee and it's good to see them trying to keep him alive because he's helped alot of people and I hope that it stays that way, it would be cool to see a fight scene between the two of them, but banish the "who would win" thoughts because we all know who would..

jet lee is the master now????????? Jet lee is a joke, he's not even a real martial artist. I don't see him hitting the martial arts community and showing off his ability to other great martial artists like Bruce did through out his life. The only thing Jet Lee has in common with Bruce Lee is his last name, end of story. I never walked out on a Bruce Lee movie and i never seen a full Jet Lee movie.

all good...   > reply

...as long as they don't LITERALLY  say "STARRING : BRUCE LEE"

I'm interested in seeing what they can do with this.
