From the trailers, I had been wanting to see this movie. My trip to the unenlightened lands of the south kept it away from me until last night. And during that time, I had read about how amazing this movie was, and how much people had enjoyed the adaptation of this off-broadway show. I was intrigued, yet I had no idea what I was getting into.
Think of Tommy. Much of this story is told with songs - all of which are gems. But sing, "Six inches forward and five inches back...I've got an angry inch! Angry Inch!" This story is quite different. Beneath the glittery makeup and crazy wigs, it's a story of someone searching for their other half. Any conventions of sex, type, race, and age are blurred beyond concern - leaving a very open perspective for one to ponder the meaning of life, or whatever. That's as deep as I'll go for this review. Apart from that, it's really funny and well acted. Especially for a debut director and a bunch of theatre people - it translates to the screen nicely.
Don't let the premise of this movie get in the way of your decision to see it. Go see it with your hetero friends, girlfriend, or favorite vibrating sesame street character. You'll have a good time.

Is it true that Marky Mark may be casted as Hedwig? That would be fat. Well either Marky or Jason Alexander.

The movie already came out. Besides, I think seeing either of those guys in a dress would be scarier than seeing the guy who played hedwig in a dress.

Could you give a basic summary of the plot?
I have no idea what the movie is about.

Drag Queen (only more feminine looking) with a singing career. Not very popular, but VERY driven. From there, it explores the life of a young boy on the east side of the berlin wall listening to american music. IT goes on from there, and I'd really spoil it to say more.

Rockin movie!!! Excellent!!! See it before it goes to video! I saw it on a not so big screen in Phoenix. But "Hedwig" is Fat! Phat! Fat! Phat!!! A fun rollicking movie!!! Takes stalking to a new clever and funny high!!! If you liked "The Broken Hearts Club", "Billy's First Hollywood Screen Kiss (especially that movie's opening credits)""Jeffrey", "Kiss Me Guido", "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar" or even "Lie Down With Dogs", you'll like this even more!!!
Enjoy!!! (And pick up the other movies too, you closet queen)!!!

This is an excellent movie...and I'm not a huge fan of musicals. It's intelligent, funny, and at times very tender and moving. The music is so addictive, I now own the soundtrack. Oh, and go with your homo friends, you'll have much more fun. :)

Ummm... I think A Random Shemp likes this movie, but he (?) also seems a bit scizophrenic. Were there some comments that were deleted in reply to his writings?
But, anyway, I loved the movie. It was technicolor glorious goofiness, with a much more serious core. And it *does* bring stalkiing to a whole new level...

Aside from being funny, entertaining, and having GREAT music, this movie is DEEP!! Hedwigs search for her other half leads her to wholeness within herself...a journey all of us are on. After seeing the dvd once, my husband and I became raving Hed Heads. Anyone but the most hard-core homophobes and rock-haters will love this movie, and they don't count anyway.
