Conan 3: Suspended Barbarian?

The Dark Horizons Web site reported a rumor that writer John Milius is clashing with directors Andy and Larry Wachowski over the script of a proposed third Conan the Barbarian movie. Citing an anonymous source, the site reported that the Wachowskis have requested changes to Milius' script for King Conan: Crown of Iron, but that Milius is balking.

The directors reportedly want the script toned down. Milius has declined, and the project is reportedly at a stalemate.

The following is a quoted observation from the anonymous source:

"I have some major news regarding Conan 3. There is a new battle brewing with "King Conan: Crown of Iron" but ironically, it doesn't involve Conan. It is a battle over creative differences. The Wachowskis are making gentle demands towards writer/director John Milius to change his Conan 3 script in a direction he would like to avoid, and the situation has become a 'stand-still.'

We have been waiting a long time for John Milius to pen a sequel to "Conan the Barbarian." Now almost twenty years later, everyone believes that the script Milius has presented is exceptional. BUT.. on the heels of a new draft, the Wachowski Brothers have expressed the need for changes - a request to "water down" the tone of the script.

Personally I find this a worry. Milius knew what he was doing when he fought Dino De Laurentiis to maintain his original barbarian vision... I believe we owe it to him now to help keep his latest vision intact. The alternative may be another "Conan the Destroyer."

Anything will be better than the first two, which sucked in a very serious way. 1 & 2 concentrated on image, and completly forgot what Conan is all about. He's such a simple character, it really should'nt be that tough to get it right. I would be interested in hearing who is being casted.

Conan The barbarian is without a doubt in my movie collection, sadly the Destroyer is so bad it will never be viewed by me again. I have been waiting years for a new one to come out. Let's hope the original script is kept. Toning down of movie is only an attempt to get a pg 13 rating so the movie can make more money.

only arnold can be conan in the first place.why would you have to tone-down a story about a barbarion.please make the picture with arnold before he's to old. j.c.

Looks like we've got another deluded movie-goer who thinks only one person can play a role. The part of Conan could be played by a wooden spoon and be more believable. Any lunk could play the part. If Arnold does it, it will be a comedy. His career is over.

RE: Conan 3: Suspended Barbarian?   > reply

Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on September 6, 2001 12:57 AM

Bah.  Both Conan movies were not true to the spirit or script of the short stories and books.  Conan is not a complex character, but he is far more than the wooden spoon that you seem to want, and Arnold played.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing someone else try to capture the spirit of Conan.

Conan = Arnold. Period.
The persona, good or bad, well acted or not, is ingrained in the popular culture and any other actor would doom the film right out of the can.  This isn't a 007 flic where the suit and gadgets make the role (along with a english accent)  Arnold's presence in both films made the Conan character come alive not the writing.

CAPPY!

Posted by A random shemp (No Email) on September 6, 2001 8:48 AM

Personally, I think there are at least a hundred actors in hollywood that could play a convincing Conan.
Probably, two hundred if you look outside of Hollywood. Let somebody else have a go at the role. I liked End of Days, didn't see the 6th day,but Arnold is pretty old now. He's had heart surgery for god's sake! Can he even do his own stunts? If not who can be a convincing stunt double for Arnold. And to throw fuel of this fire,I think Stallone would have been a better choice for the role originally anyway.

"simple", if taken from a perspective that you are just viewing entertainment. One must read the Conan Chronicles and realize that this is/was a day & age when man(woman) had to be skilled in the art of "killing" just to remain alive & free. Just one man's opinion............rw

Maybe if somebody knocked The Rock over the head with a brick he might play Conan as well as Stallone would have.

RE: Conan 3: Suspended Barbarian?   > reply

And Mark Wahlberg??? Maybe he could have a special power where he sends Good Vibrations through his sword. He's not anywhere near masculine enough to play Conan, especially with that girly-voice of his.

That dork was the "cook" in the S.E.A.L.S., thats like being the woman of the crew, and didn't he wear a boa when he was a wrestler. I wouldn't label Ventura a "Barbarian" Fred Hater, I'd label him a "politician". He was however pretty fricking cool in "Predator".

"Conan" is a simple movie to get right. He's a massive guy, very strong, agile, homorable, a great fighter, and thief, who is after loot and woman. Conan is a killer as most are in the Hyborian age. Thats about it. If they concentrate on a good story (there are hundreds in print), build a good cast (stage actors), and stay away from the commercial BS, then it should be pretty easy to make a good picture. If Stallone were chosen as Conan, the rest of the cast would have to be midgets. I think if Arnold can no longer pull off the physique, then perhaps Vin Diesel could do it, or maybe Kevin Sorbo, of course he'd have to juice in a huge way. Red Sonja, if she were in the movie would be a real pleasure to cast. There's not much prettier in the world than a vuluptous fire pie.

i think either sean connery ( if that's how you spell it), or HHH with a good accent would do pretty good. you are asking why sean connery, well if you think about it, everyone gets old at some point or another. and well HHH would look like a barbarian somewhat with a sword shield and a helmet, and I think they should test his acting abilities, since he can act like a jackass really well

Interesting that you find Arnold wooden and untrue to the spirit of  Conan.  I have been a devotee of the Conan saga for over 3 decades now, and clearly remember the elation we all felt with the way that Arnold nailed Conan's barbarian spirit and honorable character.  Granted, he may not have been the most emotive actor of his day, but can you seriously believe that a man from a kill or be killed upbringing would be slap-happy in alternation with deeply philosophical.  He fights, he wenches, he is sincerely devoted to his friends and his pursuit of personal justice, and he defends those who cannot defend themselves.  That is the essence of Conan, brother, and I found the original film vastly satisfying.  I won't even discuss the second film, for it was and remains a raging disappointment due to it's incredibly campy special effects and cartoonish portrayal of its characters.  As to Arnold in the role of the aging and burdened king, read your chronicles again.  He did age into his crown--he is at the right age and in the proper physical condition to believeably portray the part.  I only hope that Milius can push his version through successfully, for I have no doubt that any lesser version will send us screaming out the door in frustration.

You obviously don't understand the premise of suspended reality while watching movie adaptations. It's really sad that you couldn't see a difference between 1 and 2, i agree with you that 2 was not a very good sequal but 1 captured a barbarian time that has not been matched in cinema. So I am not sure where you start your lines and where you would draw them.

Actually, I think that the Rock should be the
new Barbarian. He's got
the mean looks required.
And the body build to go
with it. And he's at the peak of popularity.
What do you guys think?

RE: Conan 3: Suspended Barbarian?   > reply

The Rock would be great.
He would'nt have to do a
lot of script acting. He
already has it down pat.
His mentality is already
there. Think about it.

First of all forget about the Wachowskis Bros.
Who cares about there creative differences with
John Milius. I just want the Conan film too be out
I've been waiting for this 3rd sequel forever.
So stop argueing and do it. I'm basically on the side of John Milius, he is with all respects brilliant.
Your the writer/director, you captured the essence in the first movie and it was great, now continue your talents for the 3rd movie, and don't let those Wachowskis Bros stand in your way.
P.S. dont forget Arnold
cause he made it all happen. he is the missing link to this upcoming movie

they need to use a bit more of the supernatural aspects of the original Conan stories in my opinion.Like the ancientcthonic monsters evocitave of Lovecraft, who was a correspondant of howard's.This aspect of horror made the stories readable and is badly lacking in the conan movies.

I'm sorry but the First Conan movie ROCKED! It was the best barbarian epic ever, and who gives a F@ck if it captured the books, it was better.  Arnold was perfect for the role, and anyone else just wouldn't cut it. Also if they water this movie down like they seem to be doing with everything else it's gonna suck.

Amen my man, couldn't have said it better myself. I've watched the original so many times the tape snapped. I refuse to watch the second, it's almost as bas as the second highlander movie. For this movie to work it needs arnold to play the older king, and it needs an R rating. Pg 13 and I won't even bother to see it.

I agree, Arnold was born for the role of the savage barbarian, but Milius should kick the Matrix bros. asses. His script shouldn't be questioned because is the fitting directer, and what's this crap about tunning down the rating to PG? if you want a real Conan movie you've got to make it a X, or at least an R.

AND NOW HIS 240 pounds OF PURE MUCSLE for the movie TERMINATOR 3. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN HIS LATEST PICTURES HE IS HUGH AND NOW HIS DONE FILMING THE MOVIE AND HIS NEXT MOVE MAY JUST BE KING CONAN CROWN OF IRON IF HE DID THIS MOVIE HE WOULD HAVE THE SAME PHYSIQUE AS HE DID IN THE FIRST CONAN.

conan 1 was a classic. the fights, the revenge,
the sex,. it all makes up one image which arnold captured perfectly. but youre right about conan 2. it wasnt very good. but it was still worth watching, when you compare it to these other swordfighting movies. anyway, conan 1 is the best damn barbarian sword fighting movie ever made. and i hope when they make part 3, it captures all the emotion, intensity and magic that makes it the bad ass classic that it truly is. hell yah.

wrong bitch. if arnold isnt in part 3, then it will probably suck worse than part 2.

true, the movies were not as true to the original vision of R.E. Howard but that had nothin to do with Arnie!
The Problem was the script.  Though good, it has some big errors.
And Conan is not that shallow of a character!  I see a lot more predictible characters every day!  Van Deisel Anyone!

I think your getting a little excited fella.  At the time of the conan movies arnie was the strongest dude in the world!  It's extremely unlikely that he would ever attain such a level of fitness again!  He is fit and big though and that is all that matters.  Conan the king is an older man.  He's also a less active man the the young verile mercenary/thief of the earlier versions.
The thiong that pisses me off is I have been waiting 20 yrs for the ellusions of Conan the king at the end of conan I & II to come true and damn it I aint waitin any F@cken longer!!!!!
