Jay and Slient Bob are back in Kevin Smith's final episode of the New Jersey Chronicles. So, was it up to par with the other Smith stories?
The Story:
Jay and Silent Bob find out that Miramax got the rights to the Bluntman and Chronic comic book series, of which they were the inspiration, and are filming a movie based on the comic. They, however, were not told of this, and are receiving no money whatsoever. They also find out that Internet movie geeks are flaming the movie and flaming them, and they want to put a stop to it by stopping the movie. So, they make the trek from Jersey to Hollywood to throw a monkeywrench into the gears, and save their reputation.
Commentary:
This movie is the last episode in what was a mostly strong series (save Mallrats). Here's the gist: if you liked Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma, then you'll most likely like this movie. If you're a movie geek, then you'll like this movie because of all the film references. If you like crass humor, then this will be your favorite movie of the summer.
It's not quite as strong as the other Kevin Smith movies, but it's still very entertaining. It's full of low brow humor, an amazing list of cameos (including, but not limited to 95% of the major players in all the other Smith films), and more movie references than you could possibly ask for. The cinematography and plot are nothing to write home about, but then again we're talking about a dumb comedy.
Conclusion: 7.0/10.0
All in all, this was a funny movie, but you will probably be left wondering how Kevin Smith spent $20 million making this film. If you're offended by foul language or humor with sexual overtones, the skip this movie, because you'll be in for roughly 2 hours of pure hell.

Dogma was the only one I seen and I won't see this. I don't think all the foul language is funny! So many movies are knocked down a few notches (by my standards)by R ratings due to language. Why would someone waste time and money to see and hear what they can see for free on the streets.

Personally, I think Kevin Smith is the most overrated comic writer in the biz. His movies weren't all that great. Chasing Amy wasn't that great of a film, and so wasn't Dogma (which was a slap in the face to all Catholics). So I couldn't care less about this poor movie.

I found this movie to be one of the most enjoyable films I've seen in years. The way Kevin Smith pokes fun at everything is a gas, and the never ending list of cameo's kept me laughing in the isles. If you likes Kevin?s other films, you should love this one as well. And for the other internet geeks who say bad things about the film.. They are going to get you (see the movie to get this reference)

First of all, see clerks, it is the best one. Second of all the reason that you saw Dogma as a slap in the face is becasue it was meant to be one, a lot of people outside of catholisism think you guys need one. I think that there are a lot of good points in that movie that you should at least listen to.

I'm wondering why the first two who reviewed this even saw the movie since all trailers told that the humour was off-key, those of 'christian faith' should really know better than to see any Kevin Smith film and to state Dogma as being a slap in the face is pointless since even my cat could have told you that genius. I dig Smith's flicks and liked this one. Mind you, I have the sick humour of a effects editor. It's obviously not for everyone, no movie is, so go home, watch the Wedding Planner again and don't watch another Kevin Smith film. I'm sure he won't miss the $8 you paid to see it, since someone else will.

Okay, you know it is a Kevin Smith film, because he is in nearly every scene, his name is before the title and every ad says it is a Kevin Smith film. So you go to see it expecting a what? It will have crass humor, a loser talking crap about women, and references to everything that nearly every bible belt wearing bozo will find offensive. If you say you have seen this film and complain it did all this, then you are a moron! If you have a tv you have seen the ads, if you have cable you have seen at least a part of almost all his films to date and if you have a brain you have recognised his type of film. If you think you won't like this film, YOU WON"T ENJOY THIS FILM! So quit complaining!
As for me Kevin Smith is a genuis for getting into the business, gettting not just one but all his films made and if he wants to blow his 20 mil on weed and make the film with pocket change, more power to him. Every film made me laugh like I was seeing humor for the first time. We need more adult comedy, there are enough childrens' comedies that you can take your kids to. I want to get my friends together and go see a movie that we all laughed at then got a beer and laughed some more.
If any of this offends you, GROW UP !

As a gay, left-handed midget lesbian-boy I find Keven Smith's work to be offensive.
Gimme a break!
I can't belive there are people out there just LOOKING to be offended. There's all kinds of horrible things happening in your own neighborhood for chrissakes, and you're worried that someone made a movie that makes fun of Catholics? Has anyone heard of the Inquisition?
There are thousands of religions being practiced on this planet and they all think theirs is the only true religion.
And that is what causes war.
So screw the Catholics and screw the Pope as well. (although I'm sure he means and well and seems like an awfully nice guy.)
In the meantime, have premarital sex, use birth control, experiment with drugs responsibly, drink moderately and have fun while trying not to hurt other people.
Sheesh!

I haven't seen this movie yet, but dogma is one of my favorite movies!!! If you read the disclaimer at the beginning of the movie then you have nothing to bitch about!!!! Most catholics are to damn uptight anyway and could handle a hard dose reality!!!! If you wanna bitch about a purely comedic farce, then bitch about the catholic church as a whole!!!!

this movie was hilarious. Kevin Smith is a great writer and director. I don't see how people do not find his movies funny. People now take everything too personal. This offended me and that offended me. Well if you can't handle other points of view and criticism without getting upset...then something is wrong. If you don't like the man's movies, don't f*ckin see them. But quit bitching about things that are meant as a spoof. People need to get a sense of humor man. f*ckin Magnolia fans........

Bottom line... Kevin Smith has something to say and isn't put off by those of us who disagree with him (yes, I, personally, don't often agree with him). The guy makes the movies that he would like to see and I can only assume that most of the resentment toward his films comes from those of us who don't bother to make the films that "we" want to see.
When was the last time you saw anything out of Hollywood that came even close to bearing the personal moniker of its makers? Can you even picture how film execs look at films like Tomb Raider or Pearl Harbor? The rest of us have been asking ourselves for years "Didn't they realize this sucked when they were making it?" The answer: "Yes!" The difference here is that film-makers today know that we'll run like lemmings to a picture just because the marketing tells us to go and could give a damn if a single redeeming moment ever appears on camera. The quality of our experience while watching a Smith film is predicated on our ability to see it as one man's commentary - right or wrong. Agree with him or not. That's the point. Just don't even think about taking kudos away from the guy for trying something that most other film-makers in this country would never have the balls to try - he's taken an overmarketed, low quality, money driven industry and made it a media for exploring areas that deeply mean something to him... Imagine, for a split-second, how much the recent offerings of Hollywood mainstream films could have been improved by a adopting a similar attitude toward film-making. Sure they might not have appealed to everyone. But at least they would have appealed to someone.
Of course, if "Rush Hour 2" speaks to you on a personal level, then I'm barking up the wrong tree...

Nice commentary, Gunther.
Jay and Silent Bob had me laughing intentionally for the first time this summer. Smith's commentary and satire of a crummy industry and society in general was right on. It may not be the best movie of the summer but it is the furthest from the worst.
For anybody else who doesn't understand what a satire is, start with Mark Twain and move forward. nuff said?

If we are still talking about J&SB, I felt that it was slightly disappointing. Even though I own the first four flicks, and am a huge fan, something seemed to be missing. First of all, the story was so lame. I think Jason Biggs summed it up best when he said,"There's a script?" Smith, who in my opinion, is one of the most brilliant writers of his time, somehow forgot what got him here. Strong dialogue driven performances. J&SB let itself be carried by cameos, and cheap hollywood ripoffs. There were, of course, some great moments as well. The allusions to the past 4 flicks were great, and some of the cameo's were fun, but overall, it was lacking.
Now that the final installment of the New Jersey Chronicals has past, I hope Smith falls back on his writing ability for his next movie because as he will no longer be able to rely on the familurarity of his characters.

One thing we must not forget is that the story is about "Bluntman and Chronic". In other words, a comic which basically consisted of dick and fart jokes...if you have seen "Chasing Amy" you would know that... so J&SB Strike Back is exactly what I expected...Bluntman and Chronic are not profound figures. I don't see how Kevin Smith could write an intelligent script about them in the first place. I am a huge Kevin Smith fan. I love his work, and I liked this movie for what it was...dick and fart jokes...

Chasing Amy was a great film. Very deep and beautifully made and written. Jason Lee is a real find. I saw Clerks and Mallrats as practice films leading up to "Amy". Dogma was a catastrophy--basically a "written" work. Not realized as a film however brilliant the screenplay. Hard to watch even though I love Smith. Haven't seen the new film yet.
Chasing Amy was in another league than any of the others. A genius work.
Keep Jason Lee and that Mewes guy; lose Affleck!

I am a very devote Christian and was not offended by Dogma, because It was a joke, done by someone who dose not know God. Any offence therefore is excusable. I think you are all pissed because they are ripping on geeks like you who have nothing better to do but slam anything that makes more money than your burger flipping asses.

Listen, cacksmokers, I have been going to Church every Sunday for 18 years.
I also happen to LOVE Dogma. And Buddy Christ.
So, let's stop with the whole 'Christians need a swift kick in the ass.' We all know the truth:
It's the Born-Again bastards who need to get the dick out of their asses.

Jay and Silent Bob is a classic and will remain so. They are the 90s Cheech and Chong! If you don't get it you don't get it. I mean the sheer genius of having Afflek and Lee play two characters in a film is hilarious.
