Creator Chris Carter stated that the producers' goal was to cast someone very different from special agent John Dogget (Robert Patrick). "[Follmer] is a guy who is a little more buttoned up, a little more polished; he represents a different kind of FBI," Carter said.
Elwes was offered the part after he read with Gish on Aug 8. "All of us saw at the same time how he would be the best choice for the dynamic we were trying to create; we liked the energy between the two of them," Carter said. Elwes' character will be introduced in The X-Files' ninth-season premiere episode on Nov. 4, written by Carter and executive producer Frank Spotnitz and directed by Kim Manners.

I was upset when George Clooney left ER, and yet the show improved dramatically after he left. New characters and plotlines were introduced. I feel that X Files will also improve, now that the storyline does not center on Mulder and Scully. Although I am a passionate fan, I do believe that the show is more than the love story into which it disintegrated. And it will be great to see a blonde on the show! Cary has great comic timing (Princess Bride). I can't wait to see what he will bring to the series.

TX above, commented on Cary's comedic timing - which is something that has been missing from the X-Files since Mulder has been increasingly absent. It was always Duchovny's dry comedic input that seemed to help some of the episodes out of the rutt of taking themselves too seriously. I was considering skipping season 9, but perhaps I'll tune in just to see how he does. Good luck Cary.

Who really cares now - they should just end the series while the're still ahead - Mulder's departure, and the rumored departure of Scully after this season should be an obvious clue to WRAP IT UP, so it will go down in the history books as a successful series.

Duh! It's already a successful series. After 9 seasons, it is terrific that the show keeps it's focus on what it is named after: The X-files. It's not the Mulder and Scully show. It is time for them to leave so you can find some appreciation for them, but why submarine the whole show? It still performs well in the Nielsons and it's still interesting.

Powertrip,
It was the Mulder and Scully show, if Xena, Terminator and Wesley can pull it off I will be amazed.
I will grant them one season, if the show is rotten, I say pull the plug and bury her.

Without a doubt, Fred. If Fox and Carter can't make the show fly then by all means pull it.
My point is that I'm tired of the "typical" shows plaguing TV land. I would like to think that Carter is attempting something "fresh" and "new" without objectifying the show. Last season proved to me that they could pass the baton and make it interesting--more interesting than it had been in a while. So my hope is that The X-files is given a chance to expand without getting shot out of the sky first.

The second Xena does a back flip and goes lalalallalala I'm outta here.
Cross your fingers.
You know what would be cool? If a mysterious bomb blows up the FBI building that houses the X-files offfice.(could pose a problem due to the sensitive history that this would raise) CIA or ATF agents start picking up pieces of evidence that don't quite add up and a new X-File is born.
I think starting with a clean slate is a good thing. Maybe terminator boy could be restricted to an Iron Lung or something and he can be a Vader like character.

Yikes Cary Elwes!!
Basically they should pull the plug. X-files is actually Mudler and Scully show. I fear what this season will bring.
The past year, I have noticed how the directors are trying so hard to keep the xfiles going and the storyline is becoming a bit flat and repetive. Hope they get out of it, if not...ByeBye X-files.
Sighs...

Cary Elwes can play so many characters, it will be interesting to see what he'll be. X-files has been a more serious drama, with the occasional comic-relief episodes. I have always liked the intensity of this show! Of course I'm always hopeful for romantic entaglements and happy endings.
what are you talking about?

I was an avid viewer from the word go, but after so many series something has got to give and there is no saviour for the floundering x-files, mulder and scully have lost it completely, the story has disintergrated into smoosh, the excitement has gone out of the extra-terrestrial storyline(where is the truth now it has been supposedly exposed? and they should never have made a close connection to the partnership as the relationship suspense is what kept the plot together now that is gone, they are sinking fast. More attempts to save it by bringing in good people who will try their best to save it but may end up sinking into the abyss with it. I say get out of your contracts and save yourself while you can.
Long live Cary Elwes, and all who sail in him, and scully honey!, forget mulder, hes not coming back hes gone to better waters(or better anything), so settle down with dogget and count your chickens.
