Gladiator Sequel or Prequel Talks

The rumours started spreading way back in March that there would be either a sequel or prequel to Ridley Scott's five Oscar winner "Gladiator". ?However, Producer Douglas Wick has been evasive when questioned about the project, admitting that the idea of a prequel was there but refusing to comment on whether the wheels are yet in motion.

But now producer Doug Wick has confirmed to entertainment news site Popcorn that talks are underway to make a prequel or/and a sequel to the epic Oscar winner.

No word yet whether or not Russell Crowe ? whose character Maximus died at the end of the first film ? will also return now that he's got a Best Actor Oscar, a bigger salary, and far more options before him. "We'd have to think very seriously about that, (Russell has) a lot of voltage on screen," Wick told Popcorn. There's also no word yet on whether original Gladiator director Ridley Scott will be involved in the follow-up.

Well, I guess it's just me, but I thought Gladiator sucked. Russell Crowe has all the personality of a cardboard cutout. Many of the arena scenes, especially the ones with animals, looked...weird. (Not exactly fake, but weird enough that I KNEW it was fake.) And all that Academy business--sheesh, who's blowin' whom in Hollywood? I've enjoyed many of Scott's films, btw (Blade Runner, Alien), but Gladiator was not one of his best. It WAS, however, his most-hyped piece of work.

Actually, I'd have to say that Hannibal was Scott's most-hyped piece of work. That film stunk, by the way. Total pisser of a way to follow up The Silence of the Lambs . The book stunk, too, but it was still better than the movie.

Crouching Tiger was robbed by Whitey!

Crouching Tiger got robbed in a serious way. Fred Hater is correct which in itself is a cause for celebration. While Gladiator was an entertaing movie, it had a poor cast, a main character who portrayed a Spainard yet spoke in an Austrailian accent. Reminded one a bit of Costner in Robin Hood. The other actors are speaking in english accents and Kev is talking like he's from Ohio. I liked Gladiator but it didn't hold a candle to Crouching Tiger. I thought the best scene the film had was in the begining when Rome conqured Germania. It was neat, but its battle scenes were lame compared to say BraveHeart or Last of the Mohicans, and the story did not make much sense. Like when Rome finds out that their Northern Armies slain leader is a slave fighting in their arena. Nothing happens. The story just continues. A lot of people don't mind things like that, but a movie has got to make sense. Anyway the flick won the big award and unless the prequel is better, it will only hurt the original.

100% American,

It is very comforting to know that you found the opening battle scene in Gladiator "neat".

Now I can die.  Or should I say, now I will die.

Let me point out one thing here:

Many people complain about Russell's Australian accent in the film. Consider the following: An accent wouldn't really fix it. If the film was going to be true to reality (in language aspects) the main character (Russell Crowe) would have to speak in Spanish. Not even Spanish as we know it but Spanish in it's early stages (yes, languages do change over time).  No one would understand it so there would have to be subtitles. This would make the movie less interesting for a majority of the market which the movie was aiming to please. Then there would be the issue that he has to comunicate with people of other languages.

And yes the opening scene was cool.

Why didn't he just use a spanish accent?

He proved in LA Confidential that he can mimic an American accent perfectly. It would not fix the movie, but it certainly would help.

Actually, Crowe wanted to do an authentic Spanish accent, but director Ridley Scott forbid him to do so.

I think that article might have even been posted on dtheatre.

Now, now, children... There's no need to fight. The movie was good, not academy material, but it filled it's purpose at the time. Because of it's success, you and everyone else who saw it demand a sequel.. Russell Crowe mat have the personality of cardboard, but he's also got the Oscar, Money, and offers up the wazzoo. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was robbed, It is a spectacular and beautiful film, but do you expect the academy to grant a best picture Oscar to a CHINESE film? When was the last time a person of Asian desent won best Actor or Best Actress? I rest my case. Children, Behave!!!

When did martial arts films become "artsy"? Have I missed something?
What's next an Oscar for Van Damme?

All I want to know is when did you become a part of the 'Siskel/Ebert' team?  That is quite a review you gave 'Gladiator'.  I, myself, thought the movie was a welcome breath of fresh air.  These days, there is so much junk on the silver screen... this was a piece of history, even tho Maximus did not exist.  It had emotion that was believable, fight scenes that were believable, and personally, I did not want the movie to end.  I have seen it many times now, and lose myself in the movie everytime.  By far, it is one of the best movies to come out of Hollywood in a long time.  I would like to see a prequel as opposed to a sequel... some history on the previous relationships between Commodus and Maximus would be very interesting.
I am a big history buff, so this type of thing is right up my alley..maybe I am biased.

And by the way... ol' Rusty don't look too shabby in a skirt either.

what does "artsy" have to do with the Oscars.

you obviously don't have a clue about what makes a good film, you're a twat.

RE: TRUE   > reply

Gladiator is a good movie and Russel Crowe doesn't speak with his Australian accent. i thought he was good in the role (he makes a better hero than the studios original choice of Antonio Bandaras would have made) and the arena fight scenes are exciting, harking back to the style of films of old. I have to admit, though, that it only one any awards because there was no competition that year.

If they do decide on doning another Gladiator movie then Russel Crowe will definately have to work off a couple of hundred pounds. Has anyone else seen any of the photos of him on tour with his band? Talk about lard-ass, he's huge!

.."you must kill your name before it kills you."  This powerful line is the bases of a good sequel.

I hope they go forward with the story than backwards.

It's just you. Gladiator was more than deserving of it's awards, nominations, and hype. I agree that Ridley Scott is a great director, however I disagree with you that Gladiator is his worst work. As for Russell Crowe, he won best actor for a reason! I think he is a great actor! You can feel what he is feeling in the movie. (unless of course you are a cynical critic who has no feeling) Although he is no Mel Gibson or Tom Hanks, he is improving on his already excellent performances with every new movie he does. Cardboard cut out? Cardboard cut outs do not win best actor. I have to admit that there are a lot of blow jobs in Hollywood but Russell Crowe and Gladiator deserved the awards!!!!!! It is in now way fake, weak, or a poor performance on the actors and actresses parts! If anything is weak or poor it is your attitude!

Yea dude i totally agree wit u! It was a real disappointment! It wouldve been better if Jodie Foster came back to play Clarice! It didnt do justice to Silence of the Lambs.

Dear god...Crouching Tiger didn't win because it was CHINESE...spare me the perceived racism/delusions of persecution BS.  If you want to talk about hype, that was the pick of the week.  The only reason it deserved any attention at all was because of the special effects.  Watching that movie was 2 hours of my life I will never get back.
