If it wasn't obvious before, it should be now. Downey Jr. is trying to relive the role of Julien Wells which he presented to us in the critically acclaimed 1987 masterpiece "Less Than Zero". Heavily snorting coke, and smoking "Cob" Julien lived on the edge before finally passing away in the back of a convertable as it roared down the highway.
There is only one thing that can save Robert now. No jail, no re-hab clinic will ever make him right. What he needs is Clay. What he need is one of the greatest thespiens that the 80's ever saw. What he needs is Andrew McCarthy. Playing the part of Clay, in "Less Than Zero" McCarthy finally understood the pain and torture that Julien was expieriencing. When he realized that he must step in, it was too late.
I don't believe that Andrew will make that mistake a second time. Fly Andrew, fly to him and save him from the clutches of evil, for you are Clay, and he is your Julien.

Let's face it, folks, our young hero is a drung addict. It's not a "bad habit" or being in the public eye that gets him arrested. It's his own behavior.
An addict cannot simply decide to quit his drug use any more than he can decide to quit having a bad cold. He needs treatment, a lifetime of support by others like him who have recovered.
Addiction crosses all social lines, all economic barriers, classes, races, etc., etc. Whether the person is smart or not so smart has little to do with being addicted or being relieved of his addiction.
Being treated by others just like him who have successfully recovered is the answer. Jail? It will only put him in touch with others who know the easier ways to obtain illegal substances.

What this kid needs is a good ass kicking. Lock him in a room with Richard Simmons, Stallone right after one of his movies is reviewed, Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, and John Rocker. Pull himout in a month and he's cured or a parapalegic, either way problem solved. Hee.

Stop the new age jabbering about abuse being a disease, something you can't control.
I was a serious alcoholic and drug user until I decided to stop. It wasn't the support of people around me or any other caca like that.
We need to get away from the common treatment of replacing one obsession with another (ie, AA) or by blaming society to holding the abuser personally responsible.
I came to the realization that I was an idiot and stopped. I never attended one meeting or participated in any program. It's been about 10 years (I don't remember the exact date because I don't care) and I have had many opportunities to start again but have chosen (without any angst) not too.
I am married, have a kid and make a sh*tload of money (in the same industry as Downey).

New age jabbering? Hey, wake up, alcoholism has been regarded as a disease by the AMA for almost 60 years.
When it's treated as such, the rate for recovery is very high. When treated with "will power" the success rates are almost not on the chart.
You might think it's psycho-babble, but there are millions of people who will certainly disagree with you.

Not condoning drug addiction, BUT...
I'm a bit lost. Just who, exactly, was he hurting?
And where, oh, where, does it read in the Constitution or Declaration of Independence that it's the government's job to save us from ourselves?
I guess I'm an old hippie, but it's my feeling that the only reason drugs are illegal in the first place is because the "powers that be," (i.e. - the "captains of industry") are afraid that if they were legal, people would be having too much fun to devote their time to drudge jobs and do all the grunt work that keeps civilization operating...and the fat cats, fat.
We need to quit resorting to making things illegal to solve the ills of society and encourage people to take responsibility for their actions and make informed choices.
If we throw Downey in jail, who have we "saved?" We take another junkie off the street and leave the dealer on the outside to continue his business. Huh?
Logic is a vanishing commodity.

deep thoughts: every celebrity with a habit should be placed on that survivor island, then be rewarded drugs in those challenges, that would make good tv...

I must say congrats to kicking the habit on your own. Way to go. And agree that first one must decide to quit. They can't seek help if they don't WANT to quit. Support from friends and or family is great, but it's all up to the user.

Snort all you want, who the f*ck really cares anyway?
Tolerate and legalize, it works in Holland! Percentage-wise they've got lower addict rates than other western countries!

I've got an idea. Why don't they just leave him alone and save the city a bunch of money in court fees. It would also reduce the amount of free publicity you give these pampered f*ckers.
Legalize all Drugs! Its just a money making scheme for the pigs and arms manufacturers.

I love Robert Downey Jr. as an actor, and I'm really dissapointed that he's been screwing up so badly. But that whole thing about drug and alcohol addiction being a disease is just an excuse for the people that are too lazy to make an effort to quit. I'm sure it must be pretty hard to quit, but it's ridiculous for them to blame it on anything else but themselves.

I have to say that having him on Ally has definately gotten me to watch on a regular basis. He has a LOT of talent and unfortunately is addicted. I dont think that people who do not know about addiction have any business judging him. As a matter of fact.. some of the posts on here look as though they have been written by someone on drugs! go figure.

My name is Maylor, I'm writing from prison, I get raped every day and I love it!!
Looking forward to seeing my b*tch Robby again...he's good at sucking me dry!
The goverment must step in, or there would be chaos. Robby climbed his neighboors house siding, went through a window, and took a nap in an infants bed. Personally if I had walked in on this waste of a person I would have beated him to death, luckily, the woman was too terified and called the police. "Let him walk", are you mad?
Robby, get control of your life, or the next person may not treat you so nice.

Leave Maylor alone, obviously anyone who believes taking care of a terminally sick child is "prison" has more than enough of their own problems. Many consider that same task to be "salvation". Take a step back Maylor, and take it all in. We all die...but your time with this child is a blessing for the both of you. Downey is reaping what he's sowed. Good luck to both of you.

Smartest thing written in this site tonight!! Might I add; WE as a Nation need to stop locking up addicts and find "THEIR" cure, because 'WE' as a Nation are paying high dollar for their institutionalization and that DOES NOT include so called "HELP"!

I don't know about rehab, but prison seems to me to be a stupid consequence for Downey's actions. If you put every user in the America in prison, who would run the freakin country? A lot of people do drugs out there... that is just a fact. I feel really bad for Robert. He doesn't deserve to be made an example of, just because he takes drugs. He never hurt anybody! I live in Australia, but I hope he gets let off and fixed up, rather than f*cked up
