I can see the movie industry taking a big hit politically in the near future if they keep raising the price of tickets in the US. Americans already go to the movies 5 times as much as people in foreign countries, and if prices meet or exceed $10 in small town America, there are going to be a lot of people waiting for it to come out on video.
Think how you would feel coming out of "See Spot Run," or "Dude, Where's My Car," knowing that you just wasted $10 or more on total crap?
As long as the industry doesn't move higher though, the numbers should be OK.

I concur. Even now at $7/$8 per ticket in NYC, I know so many of my friends who simply wait for most flicks to come out on DVD or something. Especially if you're a student, nobody wants to go gamble money on a movie that might end up being total crap. We can instead spend that money on something life sustaining such as Ramen noodles or something!

What part of NYC do YOU live in where you pay $7 for a movie? You must be going to the matinee, because movie tickets in NYC have been $10 for a while now!

Here in Ontario, Canada ... big places like Silver City or Famous Players are charging $12.00 now .... but that's probably only $4.00 US ?!

Most of the releases are not worth the price of a DVD rental IMHO. I hate to sit in a crowded theatre anyway trying to hear the dialouge over the yapping of rude patrons. Much better at home in my recliner with a fresh hot bowl of popcorn and the volume on the surround sound at a pleasing level. Besides, if I have to get up to use the bathroom, I can pause the movie till I get back.

Well that's a whole other discussion. I've had enough of people taking or being noisy in theatres when you've paid a lot of money on a ticket and then possibly snacks, and you can't enjoy yourself because of somebody yapping.
I've been meaning to write a rant on here about the issue, but halfway through, I just get fed up because I can't adquately articulate my frustrations.
People need a lesson in civility, and I'm not only talking about in the movie theatre. Especially here in America...

Where do you think the money to pay actors and actresses these sky high amounts is coming from. We pay $7-10 to see the movie so they can get paid $1-25 million dollars to star in it.
For about $30.00 two people can go to a theater, get a drink, and maybe a popcorn (or candy). Then deal with other people. The noise that those people make. The theater being too hot, or too cold. And trying to stay comfortable in the seats (long movies make this more difficult).
Or for about $15.00 you can rent a flick, buy a whole box (normally 3 packets) of microwave popcorn and candy. Then put on comfy clothes, sprawl out on the couch and enjoy the movie.
The rising price of admission is making the second option even more appealing.
If you have kids, I know the second is a little harder to do. But maybe the sitter could take the kids to her/his house instead?
