(E!) After another successful weekend at the box office, Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon became the highest grossing foreign film of all time, dethroning Roberto Benigni's Holocaust comedy, Life Is Beautiful.
So far, Crouching Tiger... has pulled in $60.3 million in the U.S. Life Is Beautiful reached a $57.1 million mark. By grossing about $5.4 this past weekend, it became the highest grossing foreign film to date.
"It's a unique movie that people are telling other people to go and see," Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations, says of the film's success. "The film hits all the cinematic themes: romance, combat. And it's done with great finesse."
Look for this film to grab its fair share of Oscars this year. It has already won two Golden Globes, one for Best Director, and one for best foreign film.
Below is a list of the top grossing foreign language films compiled by E! Online news:
- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
- Life Is Beautiful (1998)
- Il Postino (1994)
- Like Water For Chocolate (1992)
- I Am Curious (Yellow) (1967)

This movie deserves an Oscar award, it was the best pic I have seen in some time. There were no Jackie Chans or other clowns in there to ruin it, this was a master piece

Masterpiece would be perfection. The movie's silly plotline keeps it far from that. Otherwise, I liked it.

I absolutely loved the movie. The cinematography was excellent. The fighting scenes beat out any of Jackie Chan's Or Jet Li's. The plot was pretty good. I think this movie was about as perfect as it could be. I hope to see more of this caliber.

what was silly about it? You've got to let some things slide. You're not going to watch Lord Of The Rings or Star Wars and expect it to be realistic, are you? I think you can look at this movie in the same respect. It's clearly not realistic...but I think it's a good story. Maybe a little hollywoodized...but wasn't Gladiator, and it was really good (imho). Explain yourself. I'm curious.

The special effects, while not real, were great. That's what's called "style". It was the oh-so-typical kung-fu movie story line that bored me. It's not that the plot was bad, it just wansn't anything special. It would need to be special in order for it to be a "masterpiece". I've seen a lot of good movies with excellent plots.
