Good riddance.
I liked the days where the only good place to find MP3s was to go on IRC to find a Fserv. Now that MP3 has gone mainstream, just as I had predicted, it will go to sh*t because of the media and the music industry.
Why is it when good things come about, they are killed by popular media???

yeah but for technology to advance quickly you need backers. And they can't all be techies. mIRC is nice for the people that have time to go through the servers and find good passwords/etc...but for those that want quick, reliable access to files, Napster, et. al, are the way to go. If there was no Napster, then we could very well still be without the P2P technology that we have today. If you involve the masses in something, future R&D will happen a lot quicker, and that's what we saw here. So what if Napster gets shut down. In time you'll have to pay for it anyways. You can still use mIRC. You can still use NewsBin. You can still use Gnutella. There are other options, so use the one that you like the most. But don't start blaming the masses for the downfall of a pretty good idea.

#1) ?The service is NOT shutdown yet. Or for good for that matter. ?The ruling was about the legality of an ?injunction order which is quite a bit different that a ruling on copyright infringement.

#2) IMESH is pretty good for an alternative. ?It can be a bit slow, but you have access to a bunch of stuff other than just MP3s.

i don't see the big issue with napster, anyway...
it's a great way to promote new music and let listeners discover new songs and bands they may never have had previous access to. i for one have found some great bands on napster and then purchased their cd. but even then, the artist sees very little of the profits from those cds anyway. why should they be so against napster?

It is too bad that corporate greed has to destroy a good thing. But I promise you this, they will never see one red dime from me. The thought of paying for an MP3 makes me laugh. There are many alternatives to napster, it will just be a little bit inconvenient

Napster was just the beginning. It was a buggy look into the future. Soon we'll be trading perfect quality music at lightspeed all around the planet, all without any kind of server or central organization. We may not be able to manage a fair election, but we *will* manage free trade of music.

As a mother of two, I will miss napster. I could listen to the trash my children wanted to buy and decide if it would be appropriate or not. I have purchased more music since using napster because I could hear the new music and determine what I want to buy. Please think twice about closing napster. I will miss it. I will get music from friends, and will think twice about purchasing any cd's.

As the details of the recent Ninth Circuit Court ruling unfold, please keep this is mind: Napster is not shut down, but under this decision it could be. We are very disappointed in this ruling by the three judge panel and will seek appellate review. The Court today ruled on the basis of what it recognized was an incomplete record before it. We look forward to getting more facts into the record. We will pursue every avenue in the courts and the Congress to keep Napster operating.

It depends on how you look at it. A few servers serving the entire system isn't "huge".
