I hate macs.  I am forced to use them here at work.  If OS X is anything like OS 9.x, it will suck it up.  But the Mac Cultists will think it's the best thing since sliced bread.

I hate macs too. Actually, I've always been impressed with the hardware (apart from the price) and how every mac to ever come out has had network support in some form. But MacOS is the most worthless OS to come around since win3x. MacOS 9 still doesn't even have preemptive multitasking. The cool thing about OS X is that it's a slick flavor of BSD. It's just looks maccy. There's a good atricle at salon about this here if you're interested.

Yeah, hardware is nice, but the OS just bombs (literally!) all the time.  And I don't even dare ask to install LinuxPPC or Debian!
It seems like Mac was a head for a while (way back when) but can't seem to get to the next level.  Oh well.  I'll settle for a PC that's 1/3 of the cost and a hell of a lot better!

I agree.  The hardware is absolutely great.  They bring us USB, Firewire, iDVD, the Newton handheld, good looking PCs, etc.  They've got a great R&D team.  Their problem is that they don't have a great marketing team.  I hate MacOS myself.  But you'd be surprised all the people that disagree(even IBM PC people).  I'm sorry.  There are plenty of things that are "easier" to do in Windows (ie, closing a program; creating a shortcut).

I think that Jobs has done all that he could do, and it's time for him to go.  Apple's a troubled company.  Their refusal to enter the PC market with their OS has been their biggest mistake thus far.  As much as you and I dislike MacOS, there are many people that do, and they'd love an IBM PC with MacOS.

Ideally, I think the best thing that they could do would become strictly an R&D company.  Think about it.  Intel outsources the design specs for one or more of their chips/boards to Apple.  Maybe Compaq gets them to design new cases that are more userfriendly(USB in the front of the computer, etc).  I think it'd work.  They clearly don't have the marketing power that the rest of the PC industry does.  Their stuff is overpriced and underpowered, so something drastic has to be done.

Of course, this is just my opinion.  What do you think?

I agree.  I do want a pretty PC!  I'm tired of the same old biege box.   Apple does seem to come up with some pretty cool gadgets though.  I've never personally used another operating system on a Mac before.  I don't know if the hardware would actually run faster than typical PC hardware.  It would be something interesting to see, but I'm not going to shell out the cash to buy Mac hardware.

I have a dual household (Mac & PC).

Calling one OS better than another is like saying one color is better than another.

Nowadays, everyone can do whatever they want to with any OS out there, even Linux (almost anyway).

Relax and don't restrict yourself to one OS.

Even if you do, "My OS is better than your OS" arguments are so '80s. Grow out of it.

It's not that anything is better.  I just don't like using it personally.  It's not to say someone else won't like it.

I have to disagree. Colors are basic elements of more complicated structures (ie. a painting) whereas OSii are the more complicated structures. I think it would be perfectly acceptable for someone to dog my painting and compare its faults to a better painting by a more skilled artist.

Any OS that lets a user app crash the whole system is pretty crappy in my book. And this is strictly an opinion, but I hate the interface of MacOS9 compared to windows or what I use.

That never ever happens in Windows. Sure.

Happens all the time in windows 9x, and actually pretty rarely in win2k. I found the random behaviour of the boot loader to be more of a problem than memory access violations in win2k. Good thing I don't use either one.

I don't have the problems with Win98 that everyone else seems to have.  I guess it's just about what hardware you've got, and if you're running a lot of hacked programs.

MacOS does hang up the entire system when a program freezes.  In windows, you can at least recover half of the time, whereas in MacOS, you cannot.  My mac-loving boss always had his mac server crashing on him because of software issues, and he'd have to reboot.

In my opinion, MacOS is inferior to windows in UI & especially functionality.  Try doing serious systems administration with MacOS.  It sucks.  It's at least tolerable with Windows...

If it wasn't for Mac's "worthless os" you wouldn't be using windows.

or trackpads
or laser printers
or a browser
(etc...)

go read some tech history

My MAC G4 treats me pretty good, and usually if a program crashes I can (control/command/esc) an she will ask if I want to quit that particular program ... usually, it does completely freeze on occasion, and back when I was looking into buying it I definately noticed the price diff' compared to PC, but in the illustration business, and likely many others (music,film,design...) they almost all seem to be on MACs and I figured there's a good reason ... Sheridan College has a MAC lab for their artists... and rooms full of PC's for the business students to type there resumes on .... now all I have to say is this ... they're making EPISODE II on G4 MACs with OSX ... so there!!

I feel de same too, it takes an individual with tunnel vision & low mental ability to vow for Mac OS. It's obviously more unfriendly than not. The problem with some is that they judge the book by its cover. Try both OSs and they will know that we are right!

If it wasn't for Xerox, you wouldn't be whining.

Shut up.

Hmm, no problems (at all, no BSODs!) with Win2k or XP Pro...

But 9x sucks! The 9x kernel is an evil, evil monster!
