"I hadn't been involved in anything like that--and she hadn't either--so I think we diffused it with some good humor on the set," Kinnear said.
Kinnear added, "I think something like that is always percolating at total discomfort. And yet if you can have at least some sense of the silliness of it, [you] can diffuse it a little bit. It was a closed set, and it was handled with great dignity, I think, by the crew and by [director Raimi]. I think we set out to make the scene as impactful as we could, but not make Katie uncomfortable. She was great. She's a real actress; she took the role very seriously."

Of course, it wasn't necessary for Kinnear to be nude. Why? Because he's a guy. For the most part, male directors figure out gratuitous reasons to have a boob shot. And here's a telegram to male directors out there: enough already of the stupid strip bar scene in every movie. Half of your audience is female and we're sick of it!!

I concur withe the first reply. You're bitching about the wrong thing. It's not that the male director's are too biased towards female nudity, it's that the number of male directors far outnumber the female directors. You're just mad that you don't get to see more 'ass-shots' of Kevin Costner or Brad Pitt. If there were more female directors, I'm sure the shoe would be on the other foot and you wouldn't even be complaining.

Its not the directors that put in topless women, its the writers who write them into the script . And as for the "stupid strip bar scene in every movie?" What the hell movies do you be seeing? I am a filmmaker/film buff who has seen quite alot of movies in my lifetime. I've seen maybe two movies with a strip club scene in them. If you are under the impression that all movies are sexist and all male directors shovenist pigs, you need to start seeing some different kinds of movies. Topless scene or not "The Gift" is an incredible film and if you see any of Raimi's other films you will see very few topless women. Calling him a pig for one topless scene in one of his movies that is still genius is like calling Speilberg a failure for making "Hook!" Man this post is long....

Yeah, I was going to point out "American Phsyco" also most movies from Franco Zeffirelli contain "Male ass shots".?I bet you Gus Van Sant has a few too. Women directors usually end up directing Gay/Lesbian Genre or Children's movies so they don't have male nudity.
Another factor is nudity sells. A lot of men will go see a movie just because they can count on seeing a celebrities breasts (who can blame them?).
But that's all beyond the point that sometimes a movie calls for nudity. The ultimate goal of a film is to be as close to realism as possible (while still being stylized for the sake of art) and everyone gets naked once in a while, or goes to a strip club.
The only time a movie shows a strip club is when it's important to the story. (Striptease does not count, neither do porn movies). A lot of movies have a plot based around the character's romance which often includes sex which is often practised without clothes on.
Thus ends my rant!

I say only two because pornography doesn't count. In any case, in those two cases (now three, I recently saw another) the strip club scene seemed to be important to the plot or to define the character's personality. Not just because the male director/writer is a shovenist pig

How about Darkman? Raimi is a very inventive and daring director. Nudity/no nudity... doesn't matter... who cares? If I get fixated on that then the movie must not be very good or I'm just not paying attention. Bottom line: Every shot should be meaningful and advance the story.

I read an article in the Philadelphia Inquir this past week about Sarah Jessica Parker. In the article she explianed that from the beginning of her career she had a no nudity clause in her contract. Even though she stars in HBO's Sex and the City, she has never once appeared nude on screen. I respect actresses like that who can be sexy and still not appear nude.

Not sexy? I sure as hell would.....Although I admittedly do respect her for being able to be sexy without taking her clothes off, I can still dream, can't I? ;P

It's true we do! But that's because we don't have a choice! We're constantly bombarded with images of male fantasies!
And I think there should be BOOBS EVERYWHERE, then maybe we wouldn't make such a big deal about it. Nudity is good. It's the gratuitous violence we need to worry about.

If you want to see Sarah Jessica nude, why don't you just pray that Michael Bolton take his shirt off too? They are the same person aren't they?

ok, so most men are pigs and most women are raving b*tches. got anything new here?Katie Holmes is cute but evidently does not match the tastes of everyone. and I personally do not think S.J.Parker is all that and a bag of barbecue chips but so what? I lean more towards the Wynona Ryder/Mira Sorvino type...yeah, somewhere in between those two...point is...oh forget it

i'm just dissapointed in her. i thought she was above that. she's always had a clean image and done well. she is beautiful, but she would still go far with her clothes on.

You are just uncomfortable with your nudity and that is no reason to take nudity out of a movie, so please keep your comments about nudity to your self.

i think the initial comment is misguided. i believe there are is far, far more male nudity in mainstream movies, i.e, not porn, etc. practically every major male star has done it at one time or another, from Mel Gibson in 'Lethal Weapon', Kevin Costner in 'Dances with Wolves' and right up to Brad Pitt in 'Troy'. This has been consistent from the late 80's throughout the 90's and now up to the'noughties'. There was even a successful film dedicated to the topic of male nudity, i.e 'the full monty'. men are less inhibited than women and the male nude scene is accepted in far more contexts than female nudity. Many female stars have no nudity clauses but i haven't heard of any male stars protesting in the same fashion. i think men have far more to complain about if they feel aggrieved about gratuitous nudity in movies but they just tend to get on with it rather than whinge. a valid point made by the katie holmes complainer but she should really take those blinkers off first and get her facts right before she commits herself.
