Review: The Legend Of Drunken Master

Jackie Chan is back. This time he is Wong Fei-hong, a student at his father's acadamy in Hong Kong. Against his father's wishes, he practices drunken boxing, which gets him into trouble and almost disowned. The major story is about the British stealing ancient Chinese artifacts, and Fei-hong and his friends' attempt to stop it. This movie caught me off guard. First of all it's dubbed, but the main reason I wasn't prepared is that Chinese films are inherently different in style than what comes out of Hollywood, so it took me a while to adjust. This movie is all about the fight scenes(as most kung fu movies are), and it has some great ones at that. If you read a review anywhere else, you'll hear about the last 20 minute fight scene. It couldn't be better orchestrated, and the film work on it was great. All I had against it was the plot wasn't that great -- typical cookie cutter movie that Chan was in, but what can you expect from a movie that was really centered around the fighting? Conclusion: 6.8 / 10.0. Although entertaining, it seemed to drag on in between fight scenes, and there wasn't any clear plot line until halfway through the movie. Also if you're not down with anything other than what typical Hollywood has to offer (say it ain't so), then this movie might not be for you. It's rated R for violence, but this is one R rated movie that would be ok to take your kids to (it's typical ku fu violence).

At first I disagreed with this article about how it's all about the fights.Then I realized, having owned this film on video for years, that the fights are all I ever watch.They are amazing every time I see them too.Talent abounds.
