When asked by a reporter to address the "cultural" impact of movie violence in light of the fact that American Beauty, a film with a violent ending, won this year's Oscar, President Clinton said Wednesday that he found Beauty "astonishing" and "an anti-violence movie." Speaking at a White House news conference, Clinton went on to say, (switch to southern accent) "I still think there's too much gratuitous violence produced in entertainment, but I don't think ...?that's a fair criticism of American Beauty." Speaking specifically about the Oscar winner, Clinton remarked: "I certainly don't think anyone who watched it and understood it would think of it as glorifying violence.?...?I think a lot of the tragedy and fear that is behind people who misuse guns would be apparent there.?And so I think, if anything, it was an anti-violence movie."
