Dell.com Deploying Windows 2000 for E-Commerce

San Francisco -- Dell chairman and CEO Michael Dell said yesterday that his company has standardized its e-commerce Web site on Windows 2000.?The company also plans to start a server-hosting business as a first step to possibly becoming an application service provider, the CEO said in a keynote address kicking off the Windows 2000 Conference & Expo here.?He declined to provide specifics on the hosting business, saying further details will be available "in a couple of weeks." "Today, companies are racing toward a new model of computing, with the Internet at its core," Dell said.?"To companies looking to keep pace with all the changes, success will be determined by the strength of their Internet infrastructure, the foundation of the business." The Windows 2000 systems at Dell.com serve 35,000 Dell internal e- mail accounts on Microsoft Exchange as well as Michael Dell's own, personal Latitude LS laptop computer.?In addition to improved reliability and scalability offered by Windows 2000 as compared with Windows NT, the new operating system also offers improved performance.?Dell demonstrated two identical dual- processor PowerEdge 2450 servers running a simulation of Dell.com-- one on Windows NT and the other on Windows 2000--each serving about 50,000 simulated users.?The NT server was able to serve 86,280 pages per minute, compared with 95,760 for the 2000 version.?Read more ...?
