Naturalization records 101

A naturalization record is a public record of somebody who was granted U.S. County naturalization records are usually the most sought after type of naturalization records. People often search for naturalization records when they want to collect more information about their ancestors.

There are several different types of immigration naturalization records - first papers (stating the intend of becoming a US citizen), petitions (formal application for citizenship), depositions, certificates of arrival (provides information about immigrant arrival), records of documents granting US citizenship.

Finding immigration and naturalization records is not that hard, provided that you know where to search. There are several registers for naturalization records. Records issued before 1906 can be found at the Family History Library. The records are indexed by state and county. Immigration and naturalization records dated after 1906 can be found at the Family Library, The National Archive, the U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services, state and county courts.

There are also some web sites that have online indexes for naturalization records. Many people use such online databases in order to locate the records they need. Some websites cannot provide full records but they can give you information where the records are archived. This is quite helpful if you do not know in which state or county the naturalization records have been issued.
