However there are some records that are not available to members of the general public (such as juvenile criminal records). Another useful way of searching for such records is through independent public records websites that pull data from all government resources.

A law enforcement records management system is a software designed to manage all aspects of law enforcement. These systems standardize all processes within the justice system.

The idea of law enforcement records management system was first implemented in 2002. It was sponsored by the U.S Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance. Currently the program is still active and it is a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the state law enforcement structures. The aim of the program is to improve the data communication between all justice agencies as well as the public. There are also some private companies working in this field and developing other software solutions for data management.
