US gov military records can be requested by completing, dating and signing a standard form 180 or DD form 214 (report of separation). Copies of the records are usually provided about 20 days after the request however in some cases t can take up to several months. People often search for military records when they apply for benefits or when they want to find out more about their family history.

Keep in mind that in some cases you will not receive full copies of the records requested. Since the National Archive receives millions of records request, in many cases they send out only bits of the records relevant to the search purposes rather than full files.
