A federal judge in New York has issued a preliminary injunction barring the operators of three New York-based Web sites from continuing to distribute software that allows users to bypass a code barrier incorporated into DVDs to prevent them from being copied.?The injunction had been sought by eight major film studios.?Meanwhile, a new spin-off company is reportedly close to marketing a technology that would cause the coating on DVD discs to self-destruct after being played once.?Like the abandoned DIVX system, the new process, SpectraDisc, is aimed at the rental market.?But company chief Nabil Lawandy told today's online edition of Wired magazine, "We think it gets around what killed DIVX.?...?There's no phone line, no credit card transaction, no special player needed, and no Big Brother element to it."
