Dre Parker is a typical 12 year kid in Detroit who lives with his mother. A sudden shift in her mother's career leaves them with no choice but to move away to China, the land of Kung Fu. Adjusting to an entirely new environment was already difficult, and Dre finds himself secluded because of cultural differences. Worse of all, he becomes enemy of the class bully Cheng. With no one else to turn to, Dre finds a timely friend in Mr. Han, a maintenance man who secretly is a master of kung fu.

Han teaches Dre kung fu, but more importantly, the real significance of kung fu as a way to maturity and calm other than exchange of punches. Dre would later face Cheng in an ultimate showdown.
