PS3 won't play dvd: what happened?

You were quite certain that in the PS3 manual it recognizes avi formatted videos and should be able to play them. But why is it PS3 Won't Play Disc that contain avi videos?

What's surprising is that when you tried your dvd on another ps3 console, it played! What's the big difference with the other ps3 and yours that in your case, ps3 won't play avi?

Your ps3 won't play games that have avi formatted videos? If this is the case, then it sounds more like you're missing some codec files. Codecs allow your PS3 to be able to correctly interpret video files such as avi formats.

Your ps3, in its original, default settings, would be able to support only one type of avi file: the Motion JPEG. This is the reason why it was specified in your ps3 manual that it is capable of viewing avi files. With so many new file formats evolving, it is easy to get lost and not able to open the newer formats.

The other PS3 that was able to play the avi formatted dvd does have the proper codecs to support and read those files. You can easily download codecs from the net and install it on your ps3. You might as well download other codecs that will support other formats aside from avi's. This is to ensure that you'll be able to open and view a wide variety of videos formats.
