A doctor and medical research, Albert C. Barnes, was founder of a success pharmaceutical firm that earn him great wealth. After some time, Barnes developed certain interest in arts, and proceeds to acquire for his private collection paintings made by famous people like Picasso, Cezanne and Van Gogh. His idea of art appreciation was totally different from those shared by art collectors in Philadelphia. Because of this, he founded the Barnes Foundation, with an intention to allow viewing of his collection by only students and serious art lovers. When he died, it was stated in his will that not one piece of his collection was to be sold.

But taken by greed and political agenda, his wish was never granted as his collection was eventually sold in auctions and scattered across the globe.
