John Rosow is best described as a sardonic, gin-soaked Chicago gumshoe whose skills as a private detective often comes with a price. His latest assignment was to track down a middle-aged man on a train from Chicago to Los Angeles. He was able to identify the man, Harold Fullmer, as one of those presumed dead after the 9/11 terrorist attack, referred to as a "missing person". Face with hefty reward of half-a-million dollars offered by an influential lawyer, he is to bring Harold back to his wife in New York, against the man's will.
