This story centers on the love story between John and Savannah. John is an army enlistee who gets a break sparingly. In one of those vacations he meets Savannah in the beach. They quickly became friends and fell in love with each other. After John leaves for deployment in the army, Savannah would write him letters, beginning with "Dear John". Due to the 9/11 events, John's deployment became more and more perilous and longer.

When he came home, John's father died after suffering from heart attacks. He also found out one more thing: that Savannah was already married to her friend Tim.
