The government of Thailand, which has previously barred earlier versions of Anna and the King of Siam and refused to allow producers of the new Anna and the King to film location scenes there, may allow the new movie version to be distributed there, USA Today reported today (Friday).?The newspaper quoted Jim Gianopulos, president of Twentieth Century Fox International, as saying that the film has been screened for the Thai royal family.?"One of the film's foremost proponents in Thailand is Prince Chatri Chalerm Yugala, who is the nephew of the king," Gianopulos said.?"He believes the film is not inappropriate." The new film depicts the king as wise and well-educated, unlike the coarse, dogmatic king portrayed by Yul Brynner in the musical The King and I.?I know this because I lived there.
