A freight train carrying bran(as in muffin bran) has derailed at the west end of Steel Bridge near downtown Portland, causing a fire and sending fireballs high into the air. Evacuations of homes, offices and other structures were carried out within three blocks of the fire. Multiple alarms were called by the Portland Fire Department. The train reportedly was rounding a curve near the bridge in Old Town at about 8:50 p.m. when it went off the tracks and hit/ruptured a gas line. Suprisingly there have been no injuries have been reported so far. While the fire is being fed by the severed gas line, more than 125 firefighters were dumping water on the fire from above, but it continued to send orange columns of flame upward toward the bridge. Because of the location of the fire, firefighters are forced to concentrate their efforts on keeping the flames away from the bridge. Thankfully there was no traffic on the bridge at the time of the fire. Tomorrow morning there will be a damage inspection of the Steel Bridge.
Here are some death defying pics from the scene, brought to you by the dtheatre crew ;)
