Preview: DT Interviews Bruce Campbell (!?)
By Charley, (DT)
April 23, 2004 12:08 PM PT
It's hard to believe that some people don't know who Bruce Campbell is," commented my friend, a movie fan. ?I had to agree. ?Blank stares were all the response I got several times this week when I told people that I was trying to get Bruce Campbell for an interview.

"Who? ?What has he been in?" ?

Evil Dead, of course. ?Army of Darkness. ?Maniac Cop. ?I realize that anyone who has seen these movies will already be familiar with Bruce Campbell, so I give up there. ?It is difficult to exlain who he is to someone who doesn't already know. ?His roles in more commercial movies often go unnoticed or unremembered by non-fans. ?I'm betting that most people who read this already know who he is, though, so I will save you the introduction.

This week, I contacted Bruce Campbell to request an interview. ?He responded personally, deferring me and my questions until October. ?He's busy, after all. ?Six months isn't too long for me to wait to sit down with the man himself, but The Digital Theatre audience waits for no one, cult hero or not. ?So, in the way of simultaneously quenching the thirsty cult fans and also teasing the future article, here is a preview of my interview with Bruce Campbell, which may or may not take place roughly six months from now.

DT: ?Wow, Bruce. ?You have an amazing house.

BC: ?Insert response here.

DT: ?Thanks for having me over. ?Your fans are dying to know: ?Will your role in Spider-Man 2 be bigger than your role in the first film?

BC: . . .

DT: ?You don't say! ?Well, that's some juicy Hollywood inside information!

BC: . . .

DT: ?HA HA! ?That's great! ?Do you and [Spider-Man director] Sam Raimi have the same type of friendship that you did when you were working on the Evil Dead films? ?Has his commercial success and your cult success sent you in different directions?

BC: . . .

DT: ?Fascinating. ?Tell me about your upcoming movie, The Woods.

BC: . . .

DT: ?I love movies like that. ?Can you give us any hint about how it ends?

BC: . . .

DT: ?Well, I guess we'll just have to stay on our toes! ?The Woods is another horror/suspense/mystery film. ?You seem to gravitate toward those genres, especially horror. ?Is that a personal preference or are you sort of typecast after playing "Ash" in the Evil Dead films?

BC: . . .

DT: ?Really? ?I did not know that. ?Bubba Ho-Tep was another horror/comedy where you played an older man who thought he was Elvis. ?That certainly wasn't typecasting.

BC: . . .

DT: ?HA HA! ?You said it, brother. ?But tell me, how did you prepare to play Elvis, first of all, and second, how did you prepare to play an old man playing Elvis?

BC: . . .

DT: ?WILD! ?You won't read that in the tabloids! ?Speaking of, is there any truth to the rumor that you are heir to the Campbell's Soup fortune?

BC: . . .

DT: ?You're right, that was cheap. ?Sorry. ?I know how you feel, though. ?My name is Charley Daniels.

BC: . . .

DT: ?Actually, it's just a coincidence. ?You've recently gotten into documentary-making. ?A Community Speaks takes a look at land stewardship issues. ?What, exactly is that?

BC: . . .

DT: ?Fascinating. ?Those are important issues for the general public to be educated on. ?When will audiences be able to see that documentary?

BC: . . .

DT: ?That's great. ?So, since it is October 2004 and these questions were written in April, tell your fans what new projects you are working on.

BC: . . .

And there you have it, a preview of what my possible interview with Bruce Campbell may or may not be like. ?Stayed tuned in October for the full version of the interview, complete with more questions, more in depth discussion, and, potentially, actual responses from Bruce Campbell himself.
